It seems really hard to call something a fare gate "pilot" if we're already going ahead and redesigning every future station that's currently in planning and design.
As part of the implementation work, staff will work to establish evaluation milestones and off-ramps to
allow the Board to maintain, modify, or discontinue the Pilot program. This work is expected to be
phased and take occur over several years as the Pilot program is in effect.
$6,000,000 will be included in the Proposed 2027 Budget and TIP for the Fare Gate Retrofit Pilot project
within the Transit Technology Program for the initial scope of implementation work.
As part of pilot implementation, the Chief Executive Officer will identify and advance efforts to increase
access to ORCA LIFT and youth ORCA card programs and will report to the Board on those efforts prior
to the start of pilot fare gates revenue service.
This action directs staff to include fare gates in ST3 station designs.

Throwback to 11 years ago (almost to the day) when a Seattle Times reporter wrote an entire lede in the Sunday magazine about how much I fucking hated Denny Way. archive.is/202307260856...
Surviving Seattle’s sidewalks: Pedestrian rage rises as the population grows
IF RYAN PACKER could use one superpower, it would be the ability to effortlessly swivel his neck 360 degrees to see in all directions.
During his 25-minute pedestrian commute from his Capitol Hill apartment to his job in Belltown, Packer would have ample opportunity to use it. Like now, as he’s approaching a three-way intersection that feels a lot like an open-water crossing.
“I call this Public Enemy Number One,’’ the 28-year-old says, stepping into a confluence of roadways where Minor Avenue and Virginia Street join Denny Way. The roads have no crosswalks, and the huge turning field invites cars to cut in front of and behind pedestrians as they make their way along Denny.
“If you’re anywhere in that space, they’re going to go around you,’’ says Packer, who has been making this trek for eight years. Sure enough, they do.About four minutes later, we’re standing on a corner that Packer calls Public Enemy Number Two: another three-way crossing on Denny, where pedestrians dodge traffic turning onto Boren Avenue.
“Look at that!” says Packer, growing visibly upset after a car cuts in front of a woman wearing headphones who barely registers the vehicle. “You don’t know where they’re going to turn, and they turn too close to the pedestrians.”
One car does stop on Denny to let pedestrians pass. This simple law-abiding act triggers rage in the driver of the next car in line, a gray BMW sedan. As three people cross the street on foot, the driver’s face congeals in disgust. She talks to herself for the full 15 seconds it takes for the crosswalk to clear, and, at the first sign of an opening, zips into the intersection, shaking her head disapprovingly with enough force to bounce her hair around her shoulders.“Look at that!” says Packer, growing visibly upset after a car cuts in front of a woman wearing headphones who barely registers the vehicle. “You don’t know where they’re going to turn, and they turn too close to the pedestrians.”
