I've been seeing a lot of amazing work on #microbial interactions and #metabolic #crossfeeding lately I wanted to share an experiment where we co-cultured prototrophic+auxotrophic lineages of #Klebsiella and found that they commensally support each others growth journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
Figure 4 from linked article. Panel A shows the experimental setup, where an auxotroph is cultured in media that it cannot metabolise the carbon source, resulting in no growth. A second diagram is shown where a prototroph is added to the media, seperated by a transwell barrier, resulting in growth of the auxotroph.
Panel B shows the in vitro growth experiments validating this. Multiple auxotrophic lineages of K. pneumoniae were grown by themselves across 4 carbon sources with and without prototrophic lineages. Growth of auxotrophic isolates was seen in co-culture while absent in single culture.
Panel C shows the log2 fold change summary across all experiments when adding in prototrophs. Growth was significantly different from 24 hours onwards.
