Two weeks left to apply for these postoc positions! We seek two postdocs interested in 1) building trait prediction models capable of resolving complex microbial traits from genomes and metagenomes, and/or (2) building mathematical models of microbial community dynamics in the human microbiome.

Agree! Not only how fast but why they are growing at that rate. There are dozens of factors that set envt'l rates. As pro-cultivation as I am, lab growth is completely artificial and the max (or even sub max) rates observed are loosely (at best) related to what is happening in the environment.

We don't believe long-time-loving as an extremophilic category is an appropriate way to view energy-starved life. Most data indicates that once energy flux is restored (lab or in situ) these cells resume growth at a more rapid pace, suggesting they are not obligately bound to slow growth

Zhiwwei gave an excellent talk in our ISME session. They demonstrated inhibitory substances (distinct from ROS) in solid solid media are generated during autoclaving but can be washed out. Solid media is not inert!

We need a microbial "culture announcement" journal, like we have genome announcements. ASMs MRA *could* work. But, they require deposition into a culture collection, which has many barriers from both sides (depositor and collection).

Sad to hear about Craig Venter. He was a central figure as I was coming up through the ranks. He was a visionary and the data produced under him was and still is extraordinarily valuable to the community. I never had a chance to to meet him. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
