This project has been in the pipeline for a very long time, and it joins the growing body of work showing the adverse effects of PM2.5 exposure during childhood. Wildfires represent a small but increasing proportion of air pollution in the US.

Nicholas Judd @njudd.com · 03/07/2026
We find no effect of additional perinatal wildfire smoke exposure on later adolescent development. This could be for a myriad of reasons: shorter exposure window, longer period between exposure & outcomes, and/or protective factors.
110
Nicholas Judd @njudd.com · 03/07/2026
Using longitudinal modeling, we find that less childhood wildfire PM2.5 exposure leads to increased developmental neural and cognitive trajectories over adolescence. Less exposure ⬇️, more development ⬆️. These results survive robustness testing.

As expected, our wildfire exposures show no correlation with socioeconomic status – making it a useful method for isolating pollution. It is important to separate this design aspect from non-equal treatment effects (which could follow SES gradients).

Nicholas Judd @njudd.com · 03/07/2026
Here, we make an attempt to break this link by examining the effect of wildfire-specific pollution on within-child neural & cognitive change. We do this by matching a child’s DOB, visit date, and location to high-resolution wildfire PM2.5 data. Constructing both a perinatal and childhood exposure.

Most prior neural work is cross-sectional & relies on neighborhood pollution. This is problematic because a myriad of neighborhood- and individual-level factors are associated with both brain development and pollution. Making it challenging to disentangle!

Finally finished reading it, quite convincing for the goal of capturing an individual’s functional localization/organization. I was (selfishly) hoping it would be more on intra-/inter-indi differences in task performance. I feel the word 'robust' is better here than 'reliability' (rank order).

Null results seem more accepted in the field, but robust ones; so it would be interesting to maybe see an opposite effect (as in little uncertainty). This is just my musings as a psychologist

It needs some level of filtering; otherwise it will just become another OA dumping ground (not in ref to your specific paper). How I see elife is they are attempting to be an alternative to Nature [insert your fav subject matter] which currently charges an eye watering 12,850usd for OA.

A similar effect happens for telomeres, yet 13 editors agreed it shouldn't get past the desk. Possibly it was seen as narrow in scope, yet education has one of the largest confounded effects with aging biomarkers. If this is happening for education... Mediterranean diets, etc watch out.
110
Nicholas Judd @njudd.com · 01/07/2025
Here, you can even see how the weight of evidence shifts across 6 different structural brain metrics related to aging when you look at educational attainment (correlational) and education from a policy change (causal).

Nicholas Judd @njudd.com · 01/07/2025
Using the largest sample of telomere length around (UK Biobank), we really find absolutely no effect from an additional year of education via a policy change. This mirrors our null finding for structural neuroimaging in Elife.

As mentioned by others (Rentscher et al., AnnRev, 2020) the vast majority of this work isn't even longitudinal. It is just people cross-sectionally relating telomere length to [insert your favorite IV]. Our paper is (to my knowledge) the first natural experimental design on telomeres.

Nicholas Judd @njudd.com · 01/07/2025
Lots of prior work has related longer telomeres to a host of positive lifestyle factors - with often the explicit hx that engaging in these behaviors will slow down biological aging (aka build a cognitive reserve).
