Now out in @natcomms.nature.com w/ @evfedorenko.bsky.social: across many people (>1k) and tasks (>300), the the brain's language network reliably shows up in the functional connectome (correlated activity in fMRI). 1/

Title: A language network in the individualized functional connectomes of 1199 human brains doing arbitrary tasks

Abstract: A century and a half of neuroscience has yielded many divergent theories of the neurobiology of language. Two factors that likely contribute to this situation include (a) conceptual disagreement about language and its component processes, and (b) intrinsic inter-individual variability in the topography of language areas. Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of small numbers of intensively scanned individuals have argued that a language-selective brain network emerges bottom-up from correlations (individualized functional connectomics, iFC) in task-free (e.g., rest) or task-regressed activation timecourses. Here we tested this hypothesis at scale and evaluated its practical utility for task-agnostic language localization: we apply iFC separately to each of 1,957 (fMRI) scanning sessions (1...

Awesome work here--a circuit interposed between the classic language network and vocalization related motor regions. @jingnandu.bsky.social nails it; we see the same circuit in our data.

A beautiful study from @jingnandu.bsky.social +team, showing a separation between the language network and what-appears-to-be a network comprising lower-level speech perception+articulation areas. Nicely in line with our NRN piece (@neuranna.bsky.social, @tamaregev.bsky.social) - yay convergence! 😊

📣 New preprint: Multiple Nested Distributed Language Networks in the Human Brain. 📣 Brain regions specialized for language have been extensively described. But are they organized into one network, or multiple? Our new preprint provides evidence for the latter:

Excited to see this out. Network Similarity Index (NSI) gives the precision fMRI field an objective way to ask whether an individual dataset can support precision mapping. Glad to have served as one of the expert raters. Congrats to @cjl2007.bsky.social and team!

(1/5) Our paper is out now in Neuron! bsky.app/profile/cp-n... The LPFC has fine-scale organization that gets missed in group-averaged data because of inter-individual variability. It is visible in individuals in both resting-state and task data.

Within-individual precision mapping of brain networks exclusively using task data
Du et al. demonstrate that task data alone can map the detailed organization of within-individual brain networks. Applications include reanalysis of existing data, pooling of task and resting-state data to increase statistical power, and studies that solely acquire task data to simultaneously estimate brain networks and extract the evoked response.

Amazing work led by Jingnan! Pooling in task and rest data can give us a lot of discovery potential like discovering hard to find networks in the thalamus (bulk of my postdoc work with Randy). Task data can be used to define networks and activations from left out runs can be investigated. Cool work!

The lateral prefrontal cortex 🧠— which we think of as critical for goal driven behavior + is a target for psychiatric treatments— is fundamentally different in individuals relative to the group averages we’ve often studied. 👇see preprint and thread, led by Zach Ladwig #neuroskyence #PsychSciSky
Image of brain networks in a group average and individual LPFC. Individuals show:
1) smaller FP network
2) more interdigitation
3) conserved motifs
4) idiosyncratic features
This was validated with task and rest fMRI
