Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

With all respect to the BBC, the reason this story "matters" is not about whether it distracts from Reform's conference. It "matters" because it is important our leaders are not conspiring to break the law.

The interesting thing about school closures during covid (agree with them or not) is they had much less impact on long-term academic outcomes than people expected (me included). But much more long-term impact on mental health and attendance.

Labour pushing the far right "end human rights" argument, just for some not all. Any defence of restricting ECHR rights for those seeking asylum relies on thinking that people seeking asylum are less than you. It's racism as policy from this government. #r4today www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
More controversially, however, the government is planning to legislate for some of its immigration changes, which have proved unpopular with many backbench MPs.

An immigration bill will make it harder for some migrants to earn settled status in the UK, and some claimants will be made to wait 10 years before qualifying, double the present length of time. The bill will also restrict how people can use article 8 of the European convention on human rights to appeal against asylum decisions.

The thing about Reform's success is this: whatever their political future, whether they have peaked or not, it is hard to express just how unpleasant the resurgence of their sentiments actually is. I grew up in Greater London in the 1990s, and a lot o that time was very grim. And it's back.
