Why do green parties struggle electorally despite widespread support for climate action? ⏳ Why are voters out of step with parties on immigration and redistribution? Hironao Yoda and Serika Atsumi study 16 Western European countries: newer cohorts link the two issues as parties do — older ones don't, so the gap should narrow with generational turnover. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0140...
Description of the article "Time dilation: the temporal structure of elite–voter incongruence on redistribution and immigration" by Hironao Yoda and Serika Atsumi, published online first in West European Politics.
Figure 1. Two scatter plots on redistribution (x-axis) and immigration (y-axis) for 14 Western European countries. Panel (a) shows party positions from the Chapel Hill Expert Survey, which line up along a clear diagonal; panel (b) shows voter positions from the European Social Survey, which spread across all four quadrants with essentially no relationship between the two issues.
Figure 2. Dot-and-interval plot of how strongly immigration attitudes relate to redistribution attitudes in each of seven cohorts, from the interwar generation to the newest "crisis" generation. For cohorts up to the 90s generation the link is small and often indistinguishable from zero; it turns clearly positive for the 00s generation and is strongest for the crisis generation.

This Sunday, Die Linke could become Berlin’s strongest party for the first time. Importantly, its success in urban centers reflects a broader sociostructural transformation: from a party rooted in the support of production workers to one drawing disproportionate support from the new middle class.

Among AfD voters, own acceptance and expectations are closely linked: - Those who reject illiberalism tend to expect an AfD-led government to refrain from such action. - Those open to illiberalism tend to expect illiberal action from an AfD-led government.
171
Nils Steiner @nilssteiner.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
We also asked whether respondents expect illiberal action from an AfD-led government, using analogous items. On each item, around two-thirds overall do. Unsurprisingly, AfD voters expect this less often—but even among them, roughly a third do.

Nils Steiner @nilssteiner.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Differences across vote choices are often substantial, with AfD voters most open to illiberalism overall. Yet even among AfD voters, majorities often reject illiberal action—and where they do not, close to half still do. The party’s electorate thus appears internally divided.

What do yesterday’s ST results imply for liberal democracy? In our ongoing nationwide survey, we asked about support for liberal democracy (following doi.org/10.1177/0010...). Acceptance of & ambivalence toward illiberal action are worryingly widespread, though majorities reject each transgression.
