most people understand politics the same way I understand a media franchise i don't follow but is popular in my social circles; through badly incomplete osmosis and fragments. this is a Problem but also inevitable with all news media as just a consumer product. politics is mostly boring.

In response to people going after him for this, Friedersdorf claimed that he genuinely had no idea Rufo had anything to do with the Haitians in Springfield slurs and then got mad at people for acting like he was being a complete rube.
BillielsTheOne 9/20/26 “Rufo? The dude who earnestly repeated the lie about cats and dogs being eaten in Springfield? He believes in colorblind equality?”

“just incredible how people paid to write about politics for major publications can be more ignorant than random twitter users who didn't have to search hard to find this”

Conor Friedersdorf, 9/21/26 “Maybe I saw it and forgot. Or maybe I wasn't on X that week. You people are unbelievable--as if anyone has perfect recollection of every post relevant to something they do a quick x post about. Of course the hive mind of X collectively recalls more things than I do individually.”

Excellent analysis. There is no sugarcoating what is happening here in Germany. Most of the political centre is enabling if not actively supporting the rise of fascism. The Left‘s remarkable performance in the Berlin elections is not being heralded as an earthquake but treated as a threat.

I scream at newspaper headlines as a second job, so it’s difficult for me to remain calm. But the absolute shit show of German media after the Berlin Election can actually only be understood as a painful scream of realisation, as their irrelevance dawns on them

Why people hate the centrists: left wave in Berlin, clear Linke-SPD-Green majority. This is a city that can look positively into the future, there should be lefty enthusiasm. And instead the SPD still hasn’t said that clearly die Linke is preferable to the CDU. They don’t believe in anything

On a similar note,EU media immediately resorted to the natural disaster framing re: Iran war and oil. It’s a catastrophe of their own making, both policy-wise and international relationship-wise, but right wing governments aren’t grilled on that. They are doing what they can in the face of adversity

most important argument in favour of banning fascist parties. You can’t keep holding “save democracy” elections and leave the fascist on the ballot. people will assume they can vote for them because “If they really were dangerous *someone* would have removed them!”. This is also brexit, to an extent

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

You need a strategy to address the fitness-to-right-wing pipeline. Because everyone is obsessed with health and self improvement and the influencer scene is toxic. And not everyone consuming trad-wife-Pilates content is irredeemable. You don’t need to compromise with the movement who kill children
