one of the greats by one of the greats: Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s “The Leaving”
The Leaving
My father said I could not do it, but all night I picked the peaches.
The orchard was still, the canals ran steadily.
I was a girl then, my chest its own walled garden.
How many ladders to gather an orchard?
I had only one and a long patience with lit hands and the looking of the stars which moved right through me the way the water moved through the canals with a voice that seemed to speak of this moonless gathering and those who had gathered before me.
I put the peaches in the pond's cold water, all night up the ladder and down, all night my hands twisting fruit as if I were entering a thousand doors, all night my back a straight road to the sky.
And then out of its own goodness, out of the far fields of the stars, the morning came, and inside me was the stillness a bell possesses just after it has been rung, before the metal begins to long again for the clapper's stroke.
The light came over the orchard.
The canals were silver and then were not, and the pond was—I could see as I laid the last peach in the water—full of fish and eyes.

I get why people are asking “what have we become?” but the answer is “exactly what you’d expect from a decade and a half of the press reciting the spicier bits of Mein Kampf at the public, and our whole ruling class agreeing we need to crack down on the lesser races and their Bolshevik allies”.

This is all very awkward because Israel, as a society, is dead set on destroying or removing the Palestinians as a people and they are not shy about saying this is what they want. It makes it difficult to convince the public the people who recognised this are worse than the ones calling them names.

I am staggered by the insistence on the part of the press that a small rich village in Oxfordshire flinching at shadows and throwing a tantrum is worthy of news coverage. These people don't have real problems, they aren't afraid, they live in a sheltered bubble and have melted their brains.

Like I can't stress enough that this tension is at the heart of everything and if you try and get round it your analysis is going to fall apart. You need wages to live. The people who own everything don't want to pay you. That's it. Everything else is commentary.

The idea that classrooms are chiefly spaces for product testing, and that it is irresponsible pedagogy not to enforce this, is both cynical and vile, and “fuck off” is a cogent response from any professional educator to any non-teaching salescreep or tech-but-not-subject-matter expert who voices it.

Eventually, it will be widely acknowledged that saying a country had the right to cut off food and water to perpetrate genocide, oppressing those who would oppose it, and dehumanising trans people and immigrants were not incidental missteps but, in fact, provided the exact measure of a man.

You're Not Here To Find Out Why The Lad In The Laundrette Is Crying

The lad works as a mascot for the local sports team: see the giant mouse head clattering in the big drum.
See the rest of the costume: the fuzzy paw shoes, the white gloves, the blue-and-white striped cape
all spiralling in one wet blur like a speedboat or racecar.
Yesterday his team lost, though that's probably not
the reason he's crying. Perhaps he's growing tired of embodying, every other week, unequivocal optimism.
His crying is loud and tidal: he takes long gulps, then pauses, then wails into the hard heels of his wrists. The mascot's name
is Archie the Mouse. It's unlikely the lad is also named Archie, though possibly in his head during difficult moments
he yells at himself Go on Archie! You can do it, Archie!
The machines sigh and break from their rolling.
Through the fogged glass, the head bounces and lands upright.
Its flat mouse eyes follow you out the door.

The EHRC Code of Practice comes into force this week. This is an attack on trans+ people. It is guidance, not law. It does not remove rights or make harassment legal. UCU stands in solidarity with the trans+ community. Join the lobby for trans equality, 9 September with Trans+ Solidarity Alliance
The EHRC guidance and Code of Practice comes into force this week. This is an attack on trans+ people.
These changes will make trans+ people's lives harder.
They will not make women safer. As a result of this we are likely to see greater exclusion from everyday spaces, increased scrutiny and harassment, and institutions rushing through damaging policy changes.
Let's be clear, it does not:
• Permit harassment or discrimination.
• Remove anyone's legal protections.
• Justify rushed, intrusive policy changes. What you can do:
• Look out for each other, solidarity is practical, not just a post.
• Report harassment, it is still illegal and your union will back you.
• Push your institution to protect every student and member of staff.
• Join us in Parliment for a mass rally on SeptemberViolence against women is real, and it is serious. It is also being used to justify this attack on trans people.
This guidance will not prevent it.
The dangers women face do not come from trans people sharing a bathroom.
UCU sends solidarity to the trans+ community. We will keep fighting for trans+ inclusion, and against the misuse of the EHRC Code of Practice.

Liberals like Hinsliff are big fans of ~tough decisions~ for the peasantry, at best apathetic about policies that kill refugees, disabled people, trans people and many more. Proud to say how nice hatemongers were to *them* but then shocked the peasants don't like the people harming and killing them.

POETRY READING
I'm curled into a ball like a dog that is cold.
Who will tell me why I was born, why this monstrosity called life.
The telephone rings. I have to give a poetry reading.
1 enter.
A hundred people, a hundred pairs of eyes.
They look, they wait.
I know for what.
1 am supposed to tell them why they were born, why there is this monstrosity called life.

From 'Ring Cairns', in 'Truth, Justice, and the Companionship of Owls' (Longbarrow Press, 2019), Peter Riley
The bit of pavement in Birstall where
Jo Cox was killed, near the library. I take
a photograph, of nothing, to remind me

of nothing, and how her name sails clear of it
how her speech is written on a history and
the killer’s name forgotten soon as said.

All we demanded was justness, to see it
brightening the air over as plain a piece of pavement
as you’ll find between love and hell.

And still a report echoes across the dull town
and still an answer stands in the language.
The photo goes into war records under “Whatever”.
