Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.

Finally had an excuse to try one of these CBN inserts I scored a while back on ebay, reducing the pilot diameter of a large counterbore cutter so I can use it on lumber, to cut a 1-1/2” diameter pocket on top of a 13/16" bore. Fortunately a former owner cut the shank to fit a hand drill already.

$The business end of a two flute counterbore originally sized for 1" socket head cap screws, but clearly it's been modified before I mounted it in my lathe and turned down the pilot further. There's a light refraction rainbow on the pilot OD where I just cut it, and also a deep spiral where I backed the carriage out quickly without retracting the cutter. I got a better finish at the end. There's a live center supporting the end of the counterbore and a DCMT3 carbide insert without CBN tips near that.$

Ah, Friday evening, when I can quit building ARMv8 software all day for a pay check, crack a beer, and unwind by... building ARMv7 software for entertainment. 𝚋𝚞𝚒𝚕𝚍𝚛𝚘𝚘𝚝 is pretty neat, it has been a while since I got an entire OS into 60MB, and it was considerably more difficult back then.

I can't speak to the traditional beliefs about it, but I can say that it's a neat reminder of how our brains use context cues like shadows to ground objects in reality. When we experience a moment that doesn't fit our mental model, we 'glitch out' & well... "the sun rests on the brains" FITS.

According to an ancient Greek legend, Theseus had a warship that was preserved as a historical relic by the Athenians. Some of its boards rotted and had to be replaced.
After many, many years, many such replacements occurred. Eventually, none of the original boards were present. Philosophers could then debate whether it was the same ship that Theseus had used, and if not, when it had ceased to be so.
A modern embellishment
If Theseus paid a nontransferable fee, allowed to be used for only one ship, for the privilege of docking in a particular harbor, would he violate the non-transferability of his license if repeated replacement of boards eventually had the result described above?

My bench vise is about to turn 40, my drill press is probably older, there's not enough information to nail down the manufacture date, but I use the vise way more often.

A Wilton Machinist's 4" bench vise with a date of 1987 stamped somewhere, wearing DIY hammer-formed copper soft jaws and well covered in dust and grease.
