I don't mean what I'm about to say in a sappy way, but a fairly hard-nosed one: natural ecosystems are often remarkably good at recovering from serious local natural disasters *if they are given the chance.*

@neurocy.bsky.social showing off hazel. Fun fact, the IDE we built at my old company Deco had some similar features like inline elements for data types, like sliders, but it was done in such a dumb way that hazel makes me ashamed and embarrassed because it is very impressive.

my love and respect for Larry David grows all the time pagesix.com/2026/09/22/h...
After the dressing down — which ended up having the crowd in tears, of laughter and joy, the agent writes — Emanuel recalls, “Seating Larry at the same table as Elon Musk: Not my best decision.”
As soon as the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star sees the Tesla mogul,”he starts cursing, yelling, saying things many people would like to say to Elon” about the SpaceX’s leader’s politics.
David was “right up in Elon’s face, before the dinner starts,” and, guests had to separate them.

this is not true. in the 80s & 90s, you used to be able to travel INSIDE a computer -- like Tron! You could move around like in a city. Hacking was more like burglarizing a second hand store, even if it was the FBI! They later removed the supernatural components of computer, we still don't know how.

🤖🧠NEW PAPER🧠🤖 (The result of an 8-year project!) LLMs seem very different from symbolic systems. Yet LLMs excel in symbolic domains (e.g., language/code/math). How do they do it? Our finding: LLM representations have implicit symbolic structure! Link in thread ⬇️ 1/n
Overview of the paper.
Title: The Emergent Symbolic Structure of Artificial Neural Networks
Authors: Tom McCoy, Paul Soulos, Tal Linzen, Paul Smolensky
Left: Neural networks encode information in vectors (there is then an image of a vector), yet they excel at tasks long thought to require symbolic structure (there is then an image of a symbolic representation, specifically a syntax tree). How do LLMs do it?
Right: We find that LLM representations can be closely approximated with symbolic structures. This approximation lets us edit the structure of an LLM’s output by editing the structure of its internal representations, as shown. There is then an image of two edits to LLMs. In the first one, the original input is 3 + 6 * 8, with an answer of 51. But if we swap the positions of the 3 and the 6, the output becomes 30. In the second one, the original input is a Python command repeating the list [Z, U] three times, producing [Z, U, Z, U, Z, U]. But if we edit the input in a way that adds a Q at the end of the input, the output becomes [Z, U, Q, Z, U, Q, Z, U, Q].

I dunno much about Maness or Anderson but Schlicter is a straight-up fascist who wants to among other things "use the law to ensure blue submission" and "imprison dissenters" to achieve the aim, "force them to be like us."
2021 Schlicter posts:

For too long red state conservatives have offered to live and let live with blue state liberals but the blues are evangelical Marxists who cannot allow us to provide a counter example of freedom. 1/

So, no more. We must, by any means necessary, force them to be like us. No quarter. No compromise. 2/

Ban CRT, Marxism and anti-American misinformation. Nationalize big tech and academia and mandate conservatism as their operational ideology. Ban leftist media and entertainment from spreading misinformation.3

Penalize barren, non-familial lifestyles through taxes and disqualification from political participation. Establish property and military service qualifications for voting. Increase America’s carbon footprint. Ban masks. Dismantle unions.n4/

Use the law to ensure blue submission. Imprison dissenters. Force them to act against their deepest beliefs to keep their jobs. End all social programs and deport all illegals. Outlaw crime again. 5/

year 1: there's still grant funding, but we may need to change how we talk about our work, or what we work on year 2: the government has disappeared one billion dollars of science funding. it is unclear why they did that or where that sits within concepts like "the rule of law"

practices that made it effective. I argue that the most significant impact of LLMs on programming language development may not be faster implementation, but making rigorous specification, validation, and design practices practical for language projects that lack the resources of large language teams or industrial standards bodies.

The solution to AI safety is not to train closed models so that they never "press the nuclear button." Because we can't stop the bad guys from finding workarounds or using open models. The solution is formal security guarantees that models don't have nuclear buttons to press.

Worse than it sounds, approximately zero new NSF grants are being funded right now: the cuts and hare-brained reallocation leaves only enough to keep previous grants funded. Research groups that do fundamental research will be unable to accept new students at all.
