I have folded a paperclip in a particularly unpleasant shape. It now threatens to destroy humanity. Debate me.
I'd think if Yud was wrong about AI being a potential threat, *someone* would be able to construct an actually decent counterargument against him

This "what a weirdo", "haha so dumb" shit would obvs exist either way, but there would *also* be, like, somebody who could formulate a coherent rebuttal

What would you want to see in a textbook (free, online, jupyter/marimo style) about quantitative/computational approaches for analyzing naturalistic social interactions (e.g., face-to-face conversations)? I'm in the early phases of drafting one and would value external input on its audience's needs.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

My educated guess is that there are contexts where smarter autonomous weapons do meaningfully reduce harms caused by wars. And there are contexts where they may well increase them. Furthermore, if autonomous weapons make wars more attractive politically, that could be a Very Bad Thing.

I think most professions don’t read, but scientists can be spectacular examples
You have to realize that most physicists don't read. Reading is not part of our culture. When we see a book or a paper we dip into it here and there and make a decision. If it looks uninteresting we put it down. We forget about it. If it looks interesting we also put it down. Then we try to figure out for ourselves where it's heading. This technique fails as an approach to reading Derrida (for example). It can also lead to serious trouble in attempts to assess less byzantine texts whose authors are, however, labouring under the illusion that they are addressing a reader who is following everything that is being said. Sociologists should bear this in mind when addressing scientists. While I'm not advocating sound bites, 1 do urge you to recognize that you are writing for text-surfers, who fancy themselves more skilled at interpolation and extrapolation than they actually are. You have to spell things out very carefully and emphatically.

Oh. My. God. Meta is launching a humanoid robotics team and their CTO's first words about it make it obvious that he doesn't know anything about robotics. from @alexeheath.com: sources.news/p/humanoid-r...
Building humanoid robots is Meta’s next “AR size bet,” a top executive told me recently. That suggests the company plans to spend billions of dollars on the effort.

During a recent conversation at Meta’s headquarters, CTO Andrew Bosworth said he stood up a robotics “research effort” earlier this year at the direction of CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The team’s existence has been reported on before, but Bosworth hadn’t discussed its strategy in-depth until our interview.

“I don’t think the hardware is the hard part,” he told me ahead of Meta’s recent Connect conference. “I’m not saying the hardware isn’t also hard, but it’s not the bottleneck. The bottleneck is the software.”

To demonstrate, Bosworth picked up my glass of water from a table between us.

“If you know robotics, one of the biggest problems that you have is dexterous manipulation,” he said. “These robots, they can stand, they can run, they can do a flip, because the ground is a super stable thing.” By contrast, a robot trying to pick up the glass of water would likely “immediately crush it or spill all the water.”

While Meta is currently building its own humanoid, or “Metabot” as it’s called internally, Bosworth envisions the company licensing its software platform to other robot manufacturers. “I don’t care about us being the hardware manufacturers,” he explained. Instead, Meta plans to approach it similarly to Google, which licenses its software to phone makers. The idea, according to Bosworth, is to take the software blueprint Meta develops and let any company use it “as long as your robot meets these specs.”
