As always, this sort of tone policing and pearl clutching about civility have always been and will always be a form of social means testing. You can care, but by golly don't care too much. Don't be so affected that you say a naughty nono word or have feelings of anger, fear, or indignation.

Throwback to when AI bros were saying they were digital artists because they both used technology to make art. So as a digital artist I found a rock, burnt some sticks, and made a busty dragoness out of nothing but shit I had in my backyard. Nothing will stop real artists from making real art.

in a refreshing change of pace, both bandcamp and games workshop announced this week that they've banned AI to varying extents. these stances are crucial during a time when AI is being rammed down our throats at every turn, and some people are starting to accept it
Bandcamp’s stance is a crucial one as the popularity of AI-generated music, regrettably, explodes. Take, for example, neo-soul artist Sienna Rose, who has three songs in the Spotify top 50 despite not existing. “She,” unfortunately, is just the tip of the iceberg. This does not mean AI has reached a standard of quality such that it’s an acceptable substitute for art made by people with hopes, dreams, and, well, souls; rather, decades of paint-by-numbers pop formulated by the same nine producers and the hyper-commercialization of music by services like Spotify – turning artists’ blood, sweat, and tears into disposable background noise – have primed people to accept watered-down, machine-made gruel. It’s not unlike the way SEO and algorithms turned numerous websites into barely sentient content mills before AI swooped in and finished the job. The powers that be have been trying to build this world for decades. AI was just the missing puzzle piece.

All we can do now is support the people and organizations that prioritize authentic human ingenuity while doing the slow, hard work of constructing something, anything, better than the modern internet – preferably somewhere else.

If this was any other set of medical treatments, the entire medical community would be scrambling to study how they could improve their own treatments.
Over 90% of transgender and nonbinary people surveyed in Norway satisfied with gender-affirming care outcomes
A survey of transgender and nonbinary people in Norway finds that the vast majority who have received gender-affirming care are satisfied with the treatment outcomes, including 93% of those who received hormones and 96% of those who underwent surgery.
The findings, included in a new report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law in collaboration with
the University of Agder, Norway, show that transgender men and women were more likely than nonbinary people to have obtained gender-affirming health care. The share of study participants who reported having made most of the changes they wanted -socially, medically, or in other ways -was highest among transgender men (35%), followed by transgender women (18%), nonbinary people assigned female at birth (16%), and nonbinary people assigned male at birth (0%).
Using data from a nationwide sample of 579 transgender and nonbinary people in Norway, researchers examined gender-affirming health care needs, care experiences, and overall health and wellbeing across gender identity groups.

This is good on how the tech/VC industry is essentially a giant collusion, but this kind of stuff reminds me of the Levy Wired piece - clearly, if it popped up this suddenly and was this successful, this kind of mind-pickle was at least pretty heavily latent in tech sf.gazetteer.co/theyve-pickl...
Let’s talk about the tech and White House. When we think of the tech industry of the 2010s, we think of progressive, optimistic ideals. Now, we’re seeing the hard tech era and tech leaders cutting DEI and supporting Trump. For those of us who weren’t there, was the tech industry of the 2010s just marketed differently, or did it really operate differently?

For workers, it was genuinely really different. It was peak Obama optimism era, and it was 100 percent sincere. The creature comforts were really good, the benefits were great, the holiday parties were huge. And structurally, tech companies were genuinely providing upward mobility for people. They were genuine advocates for H-1B visas.

People now are at this point where they're so beaten down they're kind of like, “Was it all a lie?” But I had enough visibility and access, like I’ve had dinner with Jeff Bezos, I’ve been in the room, and I can say they were different. They have changed, and been changed by intentional political actors like Peter Thiel and Curtis Yarvin. And now they’ve pickled each others’ brains.Do you think today’s founders have to move in this more libertarian direction to survive in this industry?

They don’t even have to move. I talk to young founders these days and for them, there’s no other world than the Trump world. I ask them what inspired them to go into tech and they say they read Marc Andreessen’s manifesto, they read Peter Thiel’s books, and I think, “Oh, your brain’s cooked.” They come in pre-pickled. But everyone else who could have told an alternate narrative has been hounded out of the industry.

In terms of the libertarian bent, those intentional political actors like Peter Thiel were very intentional about it. They created their own media ecosystem. They created Substack — they, meaning Andreessen Horowitz is a big investor — and paid to have content on there that would drive users to their own media. They took over culture.

Reject all claims that either government or the private sector is intrinsically more competent. Both can be run well or badly. Both have ways of rewarding either competence or incompetence. Focus on the people in charge, and their incentives.

“In like 95% of situations where a disengagement or accident happens with autonomous vehicles, it’s a very regular, routine situation for humans.” Tech companies claimed autonomous vehicles would reduce congestion. They add to it. Why would we believe any of their claims, especially about safety?

Data centres consume enormous amounts of energy, can destabilise already under-maintained power grids, and contribute to rising electricity costs. At the same time, they create very few long-term local jobs once construction is completed. It’s encouraging to see communities defend their interests.

For the first time in a long time Apple is probably not releasing a new iPhone this year. This is because the cost of RAM has risen so much that it's either not profitable enough to produce a new phone or they'd have too charge too much. Because of AI data centers. Apple, yo. Fucking Apple.
