THIS is an instrumental part of rape culture. This is the wider societal enabling of rape and smearing victims. This is what survivors often identify as the most traumatic part of the experience, and as a journalist who believes survivors I can say it’s one of the worst parts for me, too

This is why the DA smearing the victim and claiming she changed her story is so awful. A lot of these guys are already using that as their reasoning for why we can’t believe her and get upset. And many of them are journalists so they’ll influence much wider public perception and her actual cases

It happens every time. They bring up the extremely rare cases (usually they just bring up the Rolling Stone one) where allegations were fabricated to say we should doubt this victim. They try to poke holes in her story. They try to redefine and restrict the meaning of rape.

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

I think one reason Kill la Kill is overlooked is because it came out in 2013, a time when online discourse was especially puritanical, and many couldn't get past "oh no, boobs." Which I do find ironic, since the show in-universe points out that it's an example of missing the forest for the trees.
