People are always surprised to learn that packaging, processing, and transportation are almost always small contributors (<10%) of food-related GHG emissions. The TYPE of food we eat -- meat versus plants -- is a MUCH bigger factor.
Bar chart of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the lifecycle production of different foods. Beef and lamb are the highest emitting. Farm-level emissions and land use change emissions are the greatest contributors to lifecycle food emissions.

Some kind of candy lying on a brown algae background. No wait, it is a nudibranch. White, pale pink, vivid ridiculous spots of magenta and sunflower yellow. Silly and beautiful. Lower half of the image contains swatches of the nudi's colour palette.

Three lions held at the Tokyo Zoo have died from heat stroke. Four lions remain so ill that they're unable to stand. The average heat index in Tokyo in July was 110°. And we are in just 1.4C of global heating. We are on track for 3C in my kid's lifetime. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/w...
In mid-July, the zoo's lions began exhibiting symptoms of appetite loss and reduced physical activity - possible symptoms of heat stroke. By July 22, 10 of the facility's 16 lions were showing such
severe symptoms that they required treatment. Despite the zookeepers' efforts to cool the lions with sprayed water and to replenish lost fluids with intravenous drips, 3-year-old Mugi died on July 28, followed by 11-year-old Ichigo on July 31, then 15-
year-old Ruena on Aug. 2. On Monday, the zoo said that four of the lions who had been unwell had shown signs of recovery, but that three remained so ill that they were unable to stand. "We are continuing to administer intravenous fluids, liver tonics, and vitamins, as well as treating
their pressure sores," the zoo's statement said. According to Japanese meteorological authorities, the maximum daily temperatures in Tokyo averaged 90 degrees in the month of July. But when the month's average humidity level of 77 percent was accounted for, the average heat index, a measure of how hot it
really felt, rose to over 110 degrees.

Japanese officials have coined an entirely new word to signify the dangerous heat of #ClimateChange. It's "kokushobi," which means "cruel heat day." This coinage is but a drop of the coming shower of cultural changes that climate change will force upon us. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/23/w...
The term got its first use on Tuesday, when three cities in central Japan recorded 40-degree temperatures, a first for the country this year. Officials urged people to stay indoors, use air-conditioning
and drink water. There were signs that many people had heeded the warnings, as popular sites such as Osaka Castle and Kyoto's Kiyomizu Temple
saw smaller crowds than usual on Tuesday. "Numbers are difficult to understand because people perceive them differently. By giving it the name 'cruel heat day,' people will understand it better just by hearing it, and they'll feel that today is dangerous," said Taro Kawasato, the assistant director of the Japan
Meteorological Agency's climate prediction division.
