Disability doesn’t care how old you are. Specialist food is no cheaper if you’re 19. Employers don’t lose their prejudice if you’re 21. This is blatant intergenerational inequality from Labour. Younger disabled people of all severities deserve better. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Title: The climate refugee misnomer. Authors: Eli Auslender; Charlotte Weatherill; M. M. Golam Rabbani. Abstract: This brief report engages with the idea of the ‘climate refugee’ through three lenses: international law and governance, racialisation and coloniality, and the tangible impacts of climate damage and displacement, with a focus on Bangladesh. Through this engagement, it shows that ‘climate refugee’ is used as a means of exclusion towards those displaced by climate disasters, and as a means of avoiding accountability for climate damage from historically polluting states. Additionally, the piece argues that the label of ‘climate refugee’ disempowers the climate vulnerable and subverts not only their efforts to maintain their livelihoods, but also restricts the debate about climate accountability by tying it to an unhelpful set of questions.

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!

At least 35,000 excess deaths recorded in Europe’s back-to-back heatwaves
True figure likely to be much higher as it only covers about half of continent and does not include August totals At least 35,000 more people died during Europe’s four record-breaking, back-to-back heatwaves this summer than would normally be expected, according to incomplete figures from barely half the continent. Excess mortality in three of the EU’s larger countries – Germany, France and Spain – alone has already exceeded 25,000, according to the provisional national figures, and experts say the toll will rise significantly once August totals are consolidated. Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...
Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

New event! 'The show must go on? Revisiting the script of international climate cooperation ten years after Paris', this event is launching a new Special Issue in GEP, edited by Florian Steig, Eva Lövbrand and Angela Oels. Online, free, 1-2.30pm BST 30th September. www.bisa.ac.uk/events/show-...
Drawing upon a newly published Special Issue in Global Environmental Politics (edited by Florian Steig, Eva Lövbrand and Angela Oels), this event asks how the “script” for international climate cooperation is discursively (re)produced, performed, and reconfigured at a time when liberal environmentalism is under threat by great power rivalry, rising anti-climate populism, and accelerating climate disasters. How can it be that the annual Conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the 1992 UNFCCC, serving as the Meetings of the Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement, continue as normal when the world as we know it is coming undone? How can countries claim that “the Paris Agreement is working” when their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) are clearly “off target” and leading us to a 2.8°C warmer world by the end of this century? To answer these questions, the event brings together leading critical-interpretative scholars across political science, science and technology studies, sociology, and human geography.
