There are about 90 species of kingfisher around the world, most of which have brightly coloured plumage. The Australian kingfisher – the familiar, laughing kookaburra – is the heaviest of all the kingfisher species. #FactFriday

Hazel dormice hibernate over the winter, but if food is scarce outside of hibernation season, they can save energy by dropping their body temperature and going into a state of 'torpor'. In fact, dormice can spend nearly three-quarters of the year 'asleep' – and are known to snore! #FactFriday

Avocets are a great conservation success story: extinct in the UK during the 19th century, this beautiful bird was given a lifeline during the Second World War when it was able to recolonise the beaches of East Anglia which were closed and flooded as a defence against invasion. #FactFriday

The grasshopper warbler is named for its song which resembles an incredibly loud grasshopper. As we get older the first part of the hearing to deteriorate is the exact pitch the grasshopper warbler sings at! Sad to think most of us will stop hearing them at some stage in our lives. #FactFriday
