Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

Blender really should ship with a wasm runtime for add-ons, it would be a perfect fit. The python env is nice but it's very limited, for high performance or custom operations you really need to drop down to compiled code and targeting multiple architectures/platforms really is a pain.

you can automate the production of aesthetic objects, but i don't think you can automate cultural movement the same way. you can manipulate it, but that's more dynamic like warfare, territorial capture of attention.

imo populism is often misunderstood to have an ideological bent, when it's a general strategy: populist politicians support positions iteratively, based on whatever best satisfies their next win condition. Of course when they encounter that capability in a talking computer, they see it as a positive

So much respect for this, and the framing. ABC, the right wing version of Progress Toronto, has used health care workers/hospitals as reason to rip them out. This puts a lie to that (and on University ambulances can bypass cars in the wide bikelanes if needed). So many lies.

Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

As a traditional animator, I could do without the antagonistic framing discourse, but driving puppets with prose instructions by tagging the puppet parts with words is genuinely clever. imo the real MVP though is Alejandro Campos' p5.brush library, used here for rendering github.com/acamposuribe...

Ironically while the thousand injuries to Toronto since 2010 have had more short-term tangible negative impact on our family's quality of life, they're mostly reversible. Cancelling suburban train expansion / electrification is imo the most permanent destructive action the family has realized so far

man saaaame. I just dug this out and it implies that a grain of film is developable after *dozens* of photons hit it
the work of Belloni et al. on formate additions in Sect.
9).
Although a grain which has received 3-4 photons may be developable, geometric and absorbency factors also dictate that normally grains have to be exposed by considerably more than this threshold number of photons in order to ensure they are developable. In practice, the quantum efficiency of photographic systems is often only about 20%

I keep seeing this headline come across my feed and I keep thinking of this Calvin & Hobbes strip.
A Calvin & Hobbes strip.

In the first panel, Calvin and Hobbes are looking at a painting. Calvin says “A painting. Moving. Spiritually enriching. Sublime. …’High’ art!”

In the second panel, they are looking at comics in the newspaper. Calvin says “the comic strip. Vapid. Juvenile. Commercial hack work. … ‘Low’ art.“

in the third panel they are looking at a book. Calvin says, “A painting of a comic strip panel. Sophisticated irony. Philosophically challenging. ‘High’ art.”

In the fourth panel they have art supplies Hobbes says, “suppose I draw a cartoon of a painting of a comic strip?” Calvin says, “Sophomoric. Intellectually sterile. ‘Low’ art.”

My high-school art teacher used to use this one; a mean-spirited reverse Walter Benjamin sort of move. Normally the cultural authority's blessing adds "cult value" that transforms an artifact into art, but here they start by assuming the artifact already holds some cult value, and want to destroy it

The next move for the Hitchhikers stories was always going to require adding another meta-layer. A book series, adapted from a radio drama, parodying a Philip José Farmer novel, that was an elaborate prank based on a single paragraph in a Kurt Vonnegut novel...
