The corollary of this is that we NEED universities to provide knowledge - as much as we need energy, clean water and food security. That knowledge is essential to our security, democracy and wellbeing. 8/9

“We're not f****** stupid enough to p*** off the entire woke south or centrist south really of the country,” “You need to seem palatable to everyone...We just need to get f****** elected, that’s all that really matters. We won't necessarily say what we are doing, part of the point is to not [say].”

Reform cllr quoted as saying "If she was my daughter it'd still be bath night on Thursdays, I'll wash you properly this time"

No mention of if they're paid, and if so who's paying... so potentially 'free' labour in an already underpaid industry?

Something similar happened to me once, so, I walked up to the counter, dumped what I was going to buy on it, pointed out that I'd just been accused of being a shoplifter so wouldn't be buying anything in the shop again, and left. I know shoplifting is a problem, but harassing customers won't help.

It's not clear in the article exactly why they weren't covered - if it was a folder of final edits, there would - should - have been at least WIP on edit machines, a saved edit data file, all of that - that really didn't exist? AI is almost irrelevant here, human oversight has failed.

The entire day's (or days') work in one cardboard bag. Sometimes my colleagues would just leave them in an empty office, or worse leave them for person's unknown to collect. More than once we'd have to track them down the following day due to poor diligence on either side...

It was only about ten years ago we'd started recording studio tv shows onto hard disk systems, with simultaneous streaming to off-site servers, and a local external drive. Before that I'd have a bag of tapes - including the backup - I'd hand over to the production manager, if I could find them...

Met a canal boat couple once who introduced themselves as 'we're ker-razy!'. They really weren't. Not even by boater standards. :-)

It's an interesting thing that, as far as I can see, racists would always deny their racism, knowing it to be bad, and try to claim 'common sense' or suchlike. I'm seeing more direct, undeniable racism, especially from politicians. Some of them aren't even ashamed of it any more.

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

Sorry about the BBC News question - I may as well have asked why the Daily Mail is...like the Daily Mail. Didn't get in my thought about personal viewpoints and still seeing bias whilst being aware of my own angles, but bias is rarely pro-underdog :-)

I really love that someone was just very quick-witted in an unpleasant moment almost 30 years ago and it's now a classic viral tweet that thousands of people have seen enough times to remember it fondly.
In 1997, outside a McDonald's on Queen Street, an older woman told two young Korean men to "speak English," and one of them fired back with a sarcastic impression: "Ooooo I want a nice cup of tea look at me I'm English I want to eat [dry/plain] toast."

Ticket inspection by people with 'tracsis' lanyards on a @gwr.com train. No announcement by guard about who they are - internet says they're a transport research outfit, but seems like a dodgy way to do things to me. What happens if I refuse to show them my ticket because I don't know who they are?

Just so you understand the scale of betrayal: first, our "partners" didn't warn Ukraine about the incoming ballistic missiles, so the air raid alert wasn't activated before impact, robbing people of their chance to survive. Then, Starlink was restricted to stop working at speeds above 100 mph.

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC
BBC screengrab from within their Russell Brand trial coverage. Image of Brand in 70s-style aviator glasses, with earpods in, blank expression. Long dark wavy hair, black and grey beard, dark unbuttoned shirt. All on a fire red/orange and black background
BBC logo top and centre, underneath a subdeck reading: Fame Under Fire. Then the headline 'Russell Brand On Trial'.
The words 'fire'and 'trial' are coloured to look like they are glowing orange at the bottom

Where AI is used, it is used for good: to widen access, inclusion and opportunity and to increase discoverability, helping more creators, from more backgrounds, reach wider audiences, and help to make creative work more accessible to all.

And while we're on the subject: there's no ethical use of a product brought to market through unethical means. It doesn't matter whether the product is "AI" or chocolate or diamonds. Most generative "AI" was knowingly developed through massive theft from creatives; we have the emails admitting this.

We had a clear announcement about the quiet coach, & of course there's a guy two seats away making a video call on speakerphone. Trouble is the quiet coach is the first one you reach on the platform, and the signage is tiny + only in the inside. You always get fewer dicks when it's a longer walk.
