Pause AI in BC Schools @aicaution.ca · 10/09/2026

The data from this OECD PISA report is damning. "students who do not use AI outperform those who do, ... equivalent to being around one year of schooling ahead of their peers." www.oecd.org/en/publicati...

Graph showing students who never use AI scoring 505 on a "draft texts for writing assignments" task. As students use AI more, the score goes down, until students who use it daily score 480.

Ended week 1 of #SchoolLibrary book checkout with 700 books circulated! Readers were so excited to be back in the media center. On Monday a 4th grader stood in the middle of the space, inhaled deeply & said, “I’ve missed the library!” Building a school culture that centers reading! #TLSky #EduSky

A spiral place value flip chart labeled “look at how many books we have checked out this year” displays the number 700. A letterboard next to the flip chart reads “welcome to the media center”

Most children's books this old (1936) don't hold up to modern audiences. But this one does. "The Story of Ferdinand" by Leaf and Lawson. It still has so much to say about gender and peace, ~90 years later. I think about it whenever I think about my type of masculinity. #librariansky #childrenslit

Bug rundown at the pollinator plot today. We got: 🪲 Masked bee 🪲 Tarnished plant bug 🪲 Bumblebee (brown belted?) 🪲 Texas leaf cutter bee 🪲 Another bumblebee (there were one zillion bumblebees today) 🪲 A leafhopper of some kind

The species listed in the post are in a 6 picture grid, and the top to bottom list is in the order that you’d read a page. The masked bee and Texas leaf cutter are on milkweed, the bumblebees are on bee balm and gay feather, the tarnished plant bug is on the tip of bee balm and the leafhopper is on a leaf

The library of Congress publishes a guide on a database standard used in libraries, MARC. Its web design, according to archive.org, was first implemented in 2004. MARC was first invented in the 1960's. I love how delightfully archaic but functional everything about this is. www.loc.gov/marc/

A screenshot of the linked Library of Congress website. It looks very simple, few images, nothing interactive that hides information behind it, overall a pretty modest amount of information.
Basic blue is used for the link color, and default serif font used as the type face, two things that have been overwritten with custom colors and fonts in every modern website, even governmental ones.

Of course anybody who has done anything ever at any level of competency learns quickly that work is the entire point. The experience is key. Failure is learning. Effort is execution. AI shortcuts all of that. It's for people who care nothing for journey and everything for destination. It's empty.

Why do AI models hallucinate? Interesting read. Maybe, it's because they're making smoothies. They're fed Fact A, Fact B, Fact C, and Fact D. The AI blends this into a Uniform Soup of Facts. The user then asks the AI a question that real knowledge of Fact A would let the AI answer.

A woman on a balcony, holding a bouquet of red carnations, gives one of them to a soldier passing below, placing it on the muzzle of his gun while he looks up at her. All round, other soldiers walk beside him, some wearing red carnations on the muzzles of his guns too, others waiting for their turn.
