gAI is so baked into everything, that each one of us is using it without consent on the daily--even if you are not "digital." It is phone bots. It is flyers & advertisements. It is TV commercials. It is books, audiobooks, and magazines. It is the news. It is your medical records.

We are supposed to feel a heightened sense of discomfort all the time... ...or ignore what is being done to us... BOTH are BAD.

The discussions about gAI and more invasive technologies (think cameras everywhere) cannot be separated from discussing & understanding consent. They do not need or want your consent. Sit with that.

well, done properly, having an intern is actually fair amount of work. it's not supposed to be "work for free" it's supposed to be "work in exchange for mentoring and instruction." But often that is not the case :(

I understand needing help and interns are great for that, but that is definitely problematic.

in towns with active LIS programs, the smaller libraries & archives come to depend on internships which basically means they don't hire actual graduates

Yep. I was a GA in library school. I got money off tuition to go work in the college periodicals department. I learned more there than my internship.

I can't stop thinking about the idea that books are the only place left without advertising. Music and series platforms have it movies have it, even museums urge you to buy something at the ext. Reading a book while gazing at the sky is still free.
