some thoughts inspired by recent drama around AI allegations of a particular fic

There's a debate raging on x about whether or not a certain fic has used AI or not

It's revealed a lot to me about how many misunderstandings are out there about AI writing, AI in general, and AI detection tools
Part of this is I think a lot of us are relying on information we first got in 2023. And a lot of us hate AI and don't engage with it ourselves. So, a lot of our info is based on what we saw/were told in 2023 and is now outdated
If we're against AI (valid! important!) we may have knee-jerk reactions to certain things. But, those knee-jerk reactions can stand in the way of our ability to think critically and see nuance
I don't typically use AI tools myself, but in my line of work, I deal with AI writing a lot. Here's what I have learned over the last 3 years:

What does AI writing look like?

AI has improved tremendously. I see a lot of people saying AI writing is terrible. Unfortunately, it's not. It's really good and getting better (where "good" might be different from original innovative, authentic, etc). It's better than most people. :/
Strong grammar doesn't mean AI was used
Instead, there is a sort of templated "feel", common sentence constructions, common rhetorical moves, and common vocabulary that recur in AI writing and make it "sound" like AI to a trained ear
The presence of grammatical issues and awkward phrasing CAN coincide with AI writing (see below)

Humanizer tools exist and are part of every AI writer's workflow
Hybrid writing is a thing -- people can and do use AI, revise, put it through Humanizer tools, instruct it to include occasional grammatical mistakes, write in their style, write in other people's styles, etc. They write together with AI -- a lot of their ideas and writing are merged with AI generated ideas and writing, giving the entire thing higher quality and more of a human feel.
Recently there was a drama around hidden Claude tags appearing in some AO3 fics. I love when AI generated writing is indisputable like this. However, most AI writing won't have obvious tells like this.

How can I prove my writing is not AI?

Often, only other people's good faith belief in you
Apply high quality AI detection tools to your work
Comparison with a long body of already published work
Sadly, showing your revision history in Google Docs and drafts proves absolutely nothing (see Hybrid writing above) but I guess it could help combined with other things or if your audience is naive

AI detectors are trash right? Humans can't tell AI writing, either, right?

Multiple academic studies have shown that Pangram significantly outperforms other AI detectors (e.g., GPTZero), with accuracy rates in the 90th percentile. It also detects hybrid writing and writing that has been put through Humanizer tools. If Pangram detected AI in a large portion of a text, I would be inclined to believe AI was used
An academic study showed that people who regularly write with AI or detect AI have very high accuracy rates at detecting AI. Collectively, their accuracy rate was higher than the most accurate AI detection tool (Pangram) but also, Pangram outperformed every human detector individually. In other words, if someone works a lot with AI writing, you should trust their judgment more than some rando
The amount of text an AI detection tool is given influences its results: in short, the more text you feed in, the greater its accuracy is likely to be.

If I put writing through an AI detector, I am unethical
Maybe?
(For clarification, I am not personally running fics--or any writing--through AI detectors willy nilly, I'm just clarifying some misconceptions about AI detection tools)

There is a difference between putting published vs unpublished work (where published means posted online) through a tool
There is a difference between putting a minimum excerpt through a tool vs an entire work
There is no one big AI dataset -- if you put something in one AI tool (e.g., Pangram), it is not ending up in an amorphous "AI" cloud. Each company has their own model (although they may be based on an original common dataset in some cases and/or have agreements with each other -- e.g., Microsoft and OpenAI are in bed together; a lot of software licenses the use of ChatGPT in their own software)

Read the terms of service for a tool. Most AI tools must by law tell you they own your data and can use it for training. However, for AI detection tools, reusing your test cases is less attractive since training on their own results may worsen their accuracy. Be suspicious of detection tools that also have a generative wing (e.g., Grammarly has BOTH an AI detection tool AND GenAI functions. They are unlikely to use your prompts to train their detection tool, but they are likely to use your prompts to train their generative tool)
Most environmental damage occurs during the training phase of GenAI tools, not in their individual use (of course, usage of tools creates demand, which justifies training)
AI detection tools will create an arm's race > And? We're already there
You shouldn't use AI tools to combat AI tools > I didn't create this reality, but this is the reality we live in. Without AI detection tools, you will have few defences against AI slop. Because of its superiority to most writing, because of its speed, and because of its low cost, AI writing WILL drown out authentic human writing if there is not a scalable detection solution built into publishing workflows and online platforms.
I don't use AI detection tools in my line of work: I use only my own judgment. Because of that, I have a superior "spidey sense" of AI work. But I can also tell you that it's incredibly time consuming, stressful, emotional, and difficult for me to assess the use of AI. I think I am only catching 10% (due to my needing very high confidence to accuse) with a lot of time and energy squandered. I don't think it's realistic that most people or even a subset of people will be able to do this at scale.
