My teenager is buying vinyl and DVDs for this reason. At the weekend they bought a PS3 or 4 (I dunno, one of th3 PlayStations) and a load of physical games that don’t rely on downloads. The kids are ready for when The Machine Stops.

Something that has troubled me over and over in these AI years is how we seem to need to redraw every line to accommodate AI. It is possible for writing to have value for thinking and for oral exams and discussions to have value. We don't need to remake the world to eliminate writing/5

I’ve had multiple negative interactions with colleagues at work this academic year about AI use vs. AI refusal. And not interactions that I’ve started. I dunno, I just don’t remember people getting pissed off at me for not wanting to sign up for a MOOC or not using clickers in class.

Or, take something else that happened: A retired person who proudly had a schedule. It was a lot of time allocated to their hobbies, the purpose of which is to not clock in but to prioritize. You can’t really optimize that and it didn’t fit what the vendor thought an agent should do.

AI can't proofread *accurately*. I am an editor, and AI consistently suggests or inserts errors, even after getting rid of Copilot in Word. The spelling and grammar checker was never great, but now it's useless. Some publishers forbid AI use by authors and editors. All should.

Every company I've been in has gotten rid of secretaries and exec assistants in order to add more c-suite leadership folks, and every time the secretaries/exec assistants would have saved money and been infinitely more competent at the exact same tasks

The trans women in sports panic has got to be one of the GOP's most successful manufactured culture war campaigns. Somehow they got a lot of people who would otherwise say they support trans rights to somehow fear "fairness" in sports. It's a non-issue.

And structured clearly delineated tasks are often better served by more traditional computer programs. A well and intentionally designed program/database/excel sheet etc. is far superior to the AI workflow for things that specific workflow is designed for.

And where you do have a structured, clearly delineated task that computers can help with, someone's probably automated it already with simpler tech and at lower cost. People have been working on that for decades. If that's all AI can do, the cost/benefit doesn't work out.

Yes, as an example many people are still using a tab to indent their first line of their paragraphs in Word instead of using the Format menu to automate it. But will typing out questions or commands be more intuitive and easier to pick up? Will they recognize flaws in the outputs when they do?

I did the same thing. I really, really tried to use it for different things and tried different models. I used Claude Code to do the vibe code a simple app thing. It was good a lot of the time but I ended up just sort of…not using it because it wasn’t enough of a help even at certain specific tasks.

Once again, I gotta say: you cannot treat anything you’re feeding into an AI as anonymous. There are enormous ethics implications for, e.g. referees who are clearly uploading others’ unpublished papers without consent, let alone health care professionals or law enforcement

I was doxxed and had to leave my house with only a backpack. Everyone in my family was doxxed. They went after my mom. If anyone spoke up in support of me, harassers would respond to them with their home address. I had to ask people to stop showing public support for me because it was dangerous.
