Christin's wrong about almost everything, but right about this: This committee hearing matters & real Texas parents need to let lawmakers know the effects of SB12 & SB13. @txfreedomread.bsky.social will be there with a TON of data about the damage these laws have done. Bring your stories!
Tweet from book burner Texas Republican official Christin Bentley that reads:

“The Texas Senate Committee on Education will convene on Wednesday, October 7, at 8:00 a.m. to address several interim charges, including monitoring the implementation of legislation passed last session. The hearing specifically includes SB 571, SB 12, and SB 13, all of which contain important protections for Texas children and parental rights.

I expect there will be significant testimony regarding SB 13, which strengthened Texas' mandatory school library standards, established local school library advisory councils, and expanded parental oversight of school library materials.

SB 13 was an important step forward in our efforts to stop the sexualization of children and keep inappropriate materials out of school libraries. But passing legislation is only part of the work. Implementation and enforcement matter.”Second part of a tweet from book burning GOP official that reads:

“We have already seen inconsistencies in implementation across the state, including districts that appear unwilling to fully comply with the law.

If you have been involved in auditing school libraries, filing local book challenges, serving on a library advisory council, or documenting problems with your district's implementation of SB 13, I strongly encourage you to participate in this hearing and share what you have seen.

You can testify in person or provide written testimony to members of the Senate Education Committee. Public testimony at the hearing will be limited to two minutes per person, and those submitting written testimony at the hearing are instructed to bring 10 copies with their name on each copy.

This is an important opportunity for legislators to hear directly from parents and community members about what is actually happening in Texas school libraries and where implementation of SB 13 may need to be strengthened.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

When it came out I visited my high school (they paid me to it was like reparations) and met w the kids who ran the Consent Club. The culture they described was nearly identical to the one I'd grown up in. 20 years earlier. There's just no recourse. It's the only crime the victim gets punished for.

The thing about this book is that I wrote it from a deeply personal place-- it takes place where I went to hs, the main girl looks suspiciously like me-- about the rape culture I experienced at the age that was unacceptable. And all I've ever wanted for this book was its cultural irrelevance.

The books you read that you hate are just as valuable a use of your time as the ones you love. You’ll find out more about your tastes and what writing can teach you by being able to spot the antithesis of it than you will stumbling toward a personal canon with nothing to contrast the good against.

I’ve been noting that one of the main use cases that everyday users had already been putting LLMs and agents to use is the compilation of dossiers for peer-on-peer surveillance and automated gang-stalking (swarm-stalking) of other citizens, so of course Meta is copying that as a feature.

You know, researchers since the 1980s have found that men can tell when they don’t have consent. They just choose to continue anyway because they prioritize consent as less important than power, domination, and sexual gratification.

In many ways, the only thing boys need to learn are the lessons we already teach girls. They need to learn to be part of a community. And if they understand that, then the lessons on consent and sexual violence come naturally.

It is good for your son for you to say no when you need to say no. With a toddler, that might mean teaching him not to climb on your body without asking for consent. With a teenager, that might mean helping with tasks he wants you to do that you don’t have time to do.

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

Researchers find that one-time trainings about consent can actually increase perpetration. In my interviews with young men, they told me that they knew no one believed what they were saying because it hadn’t come up before—and no one actually held men accountable anyway.
