@bikesky.social I'm thinking about building a winter forest commuting bike. Epping forest gets very very very muddy in winter and it's a very fine grit mixed with mud kind of mud. It knackers even the toughest equipment in no time ... <1/?>

Leaving nature to restore itself doesn’t work most of the time, because we’ve knackered things too badly for too long. Work is required to restore natural processes so less management will ultimately be required, but it’s a decades long journey in most cases.

Deacon in local Catholic Church went full Ezekiel in homily today, re climate crisis and the horrors being visited on those least responsible: "seen recently in Nepal and Tibet. The blood of more than 1,300 people is on our hands, from this one incident of climate injustice alone."
Deacon Ray's Homily 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

"It is important we celebrate this feast appropriately because part of our duty, as the body of Christ, is to be responsible stewards of creation, another most precious gift which God has granted us. We have lived comfortably using the resources of the Earth, without regard for future generations, but the debt is now due, and we need to make difficult choice about the way in which we live. This is especially true in the western world where despite baking summers and sodden winters we are still largely sheltered from the worst effects of the climate crisis, while those in less wealthy countries suffer disproportionately, as we have seen recently in Nepal and Tibet. The blood of more than 1,300 people is on our hands, from this one incident of climate injustice alone.

To borrow a famous phrase from a fictional journalist, the job of the homilist is "to comfort the afflicted, and to afflict the comfortable". So, if you are still sitting comfortably in your pew, then I have failed this morning. But I hope and pray that you are feeling just a little uncomfortable, and that your hearts have been softened towards your brothers and sisters, whoever and wherever they may be."

THRASHED BY A LADY CYCLIST.
WHO IS NOTED FOR HER ATHLETIC POWERS.
[SUBJECT OF ILLUSTRATION.]
An extraordinary scene was witnessed on Saturday morning in Peel Lane, a thorough-tare connecting Little Hulton with Tyldesley, in which the principal participants were a young lady cyclist and a youth of nineteen or twenty. The lady was riding at a good pace, and when in a quiet part of the road the young man, who-had apparently been imbibing, stepped into the roadway, and addressing some insulting remarks to. the cyclist, made as if he intended pulling nei off the machine.
She immediately alighted
caught hold of the astonished youth, and gave him & sound thrashing, using her tists in scientific fashion, to the delight of several colliers who were passing.
The young man
made of and the list, who is believed to be a Bolton lady noted for her athletio powers, rode off towards Tyldesley.Picture of said scoundrel being thrashed by the lady cyclist, who is known for her athletic prowess. Several gentlemen stand in the background cheering her on.
