ICE is at once Trumpism in its purest form and the endpoint of its progenitor, G*mergate: unqualified 22-year-old couch potatoes, failsons, and self-styled madmen given weapons and complete impunity to play IRL video games with people's lives, to ruin personal enemies or anyone who disdains them.

When people talk about this I am convinced that it is not actually what they want. I don’t believe Nikita actually wants to play GTA Palo Alto or whatever. He just thinks that that’s what the cattle want. Or rather, he thinks that you (investor) think that that’s what the cattle want.

A real welfare state and universal health care require broad taxation, including the middle class. But high end wealth taxation is the kind of tax that protects democracy and the rule of law, and prevents aristocratic dynasties. It keeps us human.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

The one thing which does worry me about the mid-term rout that's coming is just the reckless lashing out which may follow - because ultimately that military, intelligence support which the US provides would still, practically at least, be in Trump's hands - and the Dem's won't care as much.

i take issue with the idea that dems play a central role in executions. at the federal level, no dem president has overseen an execution since JFK. at the state level, there are more than i would like, but they’re typically states with purple or red legislatures.
One more thing about the death penalty before going offline. As disgusted as we should be by Trump's bloodlust, we should NOT lose sight of the CENTRAL role of Democrats in upholding, expanding, and enabling this system that seems to horrify so many people right now. It really cannot be said enough

In other words, it is the job of scientists to devise experiments that can test their claims, to always be cautious abt what they are claiming, and to critically evaluate the claims of other scientists. By these well-established standards, no serious science is happening behind Anthropic's claims.

I will point out, however, that serious scientists are cautious with their claims. Furthermore, as we wrote in 2021 (in "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?🦜"), p.616: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... >>
Screencap from linked article, highlighted portion:

This can seem counter-intuitive given the
increasingly fluent qualities of automatically generated text, but we
have to account for the fact that our perception of natural language
text, regardless of how it was generated, is mediated by our own
linguistic competence and our predisposition to interpret communicative acts as conveying coherent meaning and intent, whether
or not they do [89, 140].

Yeah, advertising is where I’ve seen the biggest shift, and it started early there - but that field has always been about “fast and cheap” (Even before genAI, a lot of smaller jobs were being lost to either Fivrr sweatshop garbage or those clip-art based “make your own animated video for $5” sites)

Is AI taking some jobs in the industry? Probably. I'm sure there's some really shitty producer out there just feeding your scripts into ChatGPT and asking it to do coverage instead of paying readers. But it's not wide spread for multiple reasons.

And when the strikes ended, with interest rates still high, there was just a general contraction across the entire industry. Everyone had accepted there was no point in creating mass amount of new shows for streaming and the number of productions stayed lowered.

So we had this period where interest rates were high and unions were on strike that ground production to a halt. Studios wanted to end the strikes, yes, but also they were thankful because it let them kill SOOOOO many productions in a high interest rate environment.

I don't think a lot of people understand how much interest rates affect film production. They don't just open up a vault at Disney, pull out a couple gold bricks and say "go make a Star War." Most film budgets are structured as complicated loans. High interest rates makes investment less attractive.

Just speaking for film & TV there isn't really a job loss due to AI. It's been mostly due to successive punches of pandemic, streaming collapse, union strikes, studio consolidation and interest rates. This trend was in place way before Midjourney was pumping out pictures with 14 fingers.
