Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

I suspect one of Waymo's goals here is to create a permission structure for local politicians, one in which they can feel justified when they decide to not do the hard work to improve their local public transit agencies. "Look! Were part of the transit system!"

This lot on Steiner St was fully approved for development over a decade ago. No zoning issues, no opposition. It still sits vacant. The City should acquire lots like this and build social housing. Because just waiting indefinitely for speculators to build luxury condos isn’t a good plan for anyone.

The 20th Avenue NE bridge over Ravenna Park opened in 1913, but in 1975 the City of Seattle decided to convert it to pedestrian and bike only rather than spend money on a costly retrofit that would allow it to keep carrying cars. I think about that a lot.

SF YIMBY has officially come out against Prop I, a ballot measure that would dedicated over $100 million a year to affordable housing and rent relief. For anyone who joined SF YIMBY in good faith thinking it was about housing for all, let this be your wake up call. The mask is off.

A lot of “transit advocates” are mistaking being “anti-driver” for “anti-car”. This neoliberal framing gets more airtime *because* it lacks class analysis. Express lanes, VMT tax, etc are don’t expropriate the vault of money made from making cars necessary. That’s in Chevron/GM’s hands.

The regional transit measure is well on the way to the ballot this November. A massive advocate signature gathering effort - over 1,000 people! - generated (pretty sure) a record 77,100 signatures of the 305,000 total. It would have been very close on timing and qualification without that effort.

And people's biggest misconception is that subrbs can't justify public transit. 1. Historically, whether San Francisco or China, etc, transit went in before, and urban planning and density followed. 2. "Car hells" like the Inland Empire are still denser than places with good buses like Portland.

I live in an apartment and park my car outside. There's no way I can afford a new EV even with a $7,500 discount, and I wouldn't have anywhere to charge it if I did. The #1 thing that would reduce my emissions is better transit service. But no one in local or state gov seems interested.

We’ve been relying on extracting resources from other areas, both within America and the Global South, at their economic and public health expenses, when we had the long term solution set up long before cars even became popular. Muni has been powered by water for 90 years. We just need more wire.

We all knew Waymo would make their cars progressively less safe once they were more accepted. They are so confident about it as a strategy that they are admitting it in public. Notice how they quote their old safety numbers as they promote more aggressive, explicit rule breaking.

The main goal of transit is moving people. Collecting fares is how society has currently chosen to partially fund that. But the new gate and reader system puts fares over moving people. And that indicates a loss of mission focus on everyone's part.

We really gotta reevaluate a society where some of its "environmental" advocates are more concerned about the *potential* cost savings of automating public transit drivers than the environmental and social impact of the technology required to do that, assuming it is possible.
