Housing First costs half as much as what most cities spend on homelessness solutions today. Finland implemented it and eliminated homelessness in Helsinki. I even got a major academic on the topic to discuss it at my local book store. Read it. bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

This paranoia comes from before BART was ever built. San Mateo left BART (not out of popular demand but bcuz they’ve always been detached elites) saying things like “it’ll bring crime.” The racism should’ve been readily apparent. How far do you think you could take a house worth of stuff by train???

This shit’s been driving me crazy. The same ppl that demand BART “find efficiency” for the last 3 years are the same demanding BART increase police presence and bloat their budget. BART crime levels have never been above general. You just hate seeing poor people. That’s not crime. You’re classist.

And the desire to see poor people “pay their fair share” inhibits people from creating a system better for the environment. Free fare and ubiquitous service would be cheaper, better for the environment, and take away any reason for holding onto your car.

Fares are just a taxation method, an active choice in favor of regressive, poverty punishment.

So it was. So it’s possible. They handled it poorly, so let’s not do that.

Also, no, many cities with free fare are sizable.

Okay, and?… Collecting fares doesn’t magically create more GDP. It’s all a decision of who pays.

For many bus agencies, fares are less than 6% of their budget. 49+ cities in France have free fare, including many cities in the US. Ho Chi Minh City is transitioning to it.

Geoff 🇮🇪🇵🇸🌹 @monophonique.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
It literally is. Everyone talks about fares like they’re money left on the table, but it’s just one of many acquisition methods.

Just fucking make transit free. Look how hard we’re making this on ourselves in an effort to punish the poor and avoid taking the rich.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

I suspect one of Waymo's goals here is to create a permission structure for local politicians, one in which they can feel justified when they decide to not do the hard work to improve their local public transit agencies. "Look! Were part of the transit system!"

We almost electrified a huge chunk of the US rail network in the 70s during the oil crisis then. Sure would’ve been nice to have now!

We endorse Nate Adams to represent District 2 on Oakland’s City Council! Nate is a long time DSA member who served comrades as co-chair of @DSAEastBay, stood up to criminal landlords, and seen first hand how the greed of capitalists keeps innocent people hungry and unhoused.

This lot on Steiner St was fully approved for development over a decade ago. No zoning issues, no opposition. It still sits vacant. The City should acquire lots like this and build social housing. Because just waiting indefinitely for speculators to build luxury condos isn’t a good plan for anyone.

The 20th Avenue NE bridge over Ravenna Park opened in 1913, but in 1975 the City of Seattle decided to convert it to pedestrian and bike only rather than spend money on a costly retrofit that would allow it to keep carrying cars. I think about that a lot.

Yep! And we’re still so disunified the Federal government wasn’t sure it had the authority to, except in the case of calling it military infrastructure.

I’d had this instinct for some time, but the way the book spells out how due to a mixture of the post-war economy, red scare, profitability, and US’s leg up on oil meant we now use military technology (cars and highways) as transport, instead of civil infrastructure (trains, sometimes electric)

There’s nothing insightful here. They have a recent survey heatmap that shows this and more. And the desired routes are 90% the same as the streetcars we used to have. The struggle is the political will to make it happen, and demanding the taxation required to do it.

Fixes like democratizing UAW partly came from the labor party side of DSA. ILWU and UE are better internationalists partly because they’re not in the CIO and the captured power structure with the Dems. Like work with whatever candidate eases Labor’s pain, but the core critique is right

Because that’s only part of the whole equation. Even when we had more unions, they were still participatory in overconsumption, imperialism because the government intentionally removed internationalist leaders. Many are presently undemocratic because of this era.

SF YIMBY has officially come out against Prop I, a ballot measure that would dedicated over $100 million a year to affordable housing and rent relief. For anyone who joined SF YIMBY in good faith thinking it was about housing for all, let this be your wake up call. The mask is off.

That and cameras divert attention from more radical design change. Streets are safe in Europe and Asia because they have a completely different designs and relationships. Like what makes throughways in US unsafe is having parks and SFH on them. That can change, but cameras are just politically easy.

A lot of “transit advocates” are mistaking being “anti-driver” for “anti-car”. This neoliberal framing gets more airtime *because* it lacks class analysis. Express lanes, VMT tax, etc are don’t expropriate the vault of money made from making cars necessary. That’s in Chevron/GM’s hands.

Why only one day? Fares are 3.6% of the budget, or $11m. That’s less than a quarter of the $50m getting added to the budget if the regional measure passes. Let’s make it permanent.
