This is a free PDF to my article about trauma-informed, survivor-centered teaching. It's all about how to talk about sexual violence with the assumption your class is full of survivors who are eager to have that conversation--as long as you can do it without victim-blame or rape myths.

As this season of repentance draws to a close, I write to atone for the many ways in which I have not been my best self to each of you and to my community. For all the times I have not been an attentive friend, for the times I have dropped the ball, for the times I have been too quick to anger 1/3

Periodic reminder that the economics concept of "productive" doesn't reflect the common meaning of "hard working." Between social settings, if not within them, human energy expended is negatively correlated with productivity.

Art Stinchcombe (1997).
The guts of institutions is that somebody somewhere really cares to hold an organization to the standards and is often paid to do that. Sometimes that somebody is inside the organization, maintaining its competence. Sometimes it is in an accrediting body, sending out volunteers to see if there is really any algebra in the algebra course. And sometimes that somebody, or his or her commitment, is lacking, in which case the center cannot hold, and mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.

I wonder what it would look like if we stopped treating routine challenges as crises. What if many of the crisis-like events we experience are actually failures of infrastructure or labor exploitation? Would changing how we approach these challenges free us to fight for what we believe in?

Except for religious studies, the graduates of these "loan ineligible" majors are disproportionately women. Fans of this policy have probably never considered that social worker, cosmetician, teachers aide, etc might be low-paying jobs *because* women do them. newrepublic.com/post/213446/...
The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that the Education Department has finalized a rule that will force schools to prove that the loans students are taking out are paying off.

Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music, and cosmetic certification programs will be hit the hardest. For-profit programs will also be hit particularly hard.

In the real world you don't need to ask for extra tume as an accommodation bc no one is timing you with a stopwatch. You can just work longer hours & not even tell anyone. & as to point about notetakers elsewhere in thread, in real world you can use a computer w/ whatever software to take notes.

Sociology studies how social structure, institutions, and cultural beliefs affect individuals, & vice versa. Why is this threatening to the far right? Because it challenges self-serving narratives that explain away outsized wealth & power as natural, inevitable, or divinely or genetically decreed.
