I have been sewing clothing off and on for 55 years. And the biggest shift/improvement is patience. Taking the time to baste. Going slowly on tricky parts. Not doing tricky things when tired. Checking fit before doing difficult to rip out stuff.

Restorative justice doesn't mean "nothing bad ever happens to you." It means, "in determining what happens from here on out, we center the needs of your victim to repair what happened to them over your own needs."

Whatever the marginalised group, whether disabled people, trans and non-binary individuals, people seeking asylum and other migrants etc, Labour has proven to be the worst government for human rights in decades. There really is no group they won't target before they actually fix wider issues. 2/

If you didn't hit the word count you wanted to write this week, maybe you were writing and didn't realize it. Putting words on the page is only a small part of writing. Keep going, friends. The world needs your ideas. #AcademicSky #academia #academicwriting #editing #amediting #revising #writing

Okay so I don’t think this is true - historically speaking, mass violence consistently comes from an attempted rejection (rather than a *lack*) of empathetic impulses, which exist whether we want them to or not, and desire to distance oneself from an externalized target.

Imagining people who do evil things to be devoid of empathy is a way of comforting oneself, because we all know that we feel empathy and therefore are not the kind of person who could do *that.* It’s much scarier to know that a conglomeration of circumstances can turn basically anybody bad.

These sweeping statements about more work being like software engineering that people realize and “all service work can be automated” immediately hits me as 1) a claim that can be tested and 2) one that hasn’t been sufficiently tested. But they all just blithely accept it.

I have said before and will again: any electoral reform commission must NOT rule out a change of system BEFORE the next election if needed. We cannot risk a minority vote handing a huge majority to any party that would take a shredder to democracy itself.

In many ways, the only thing boys need to learn are the lessons we already teach girls. They need to learn to be part of a community. And if they understand that, then the lessons on consent and sexual violence come naturally.

One thing that infuriated me when I was on strike was how the media and social media would present striking workers as being the problem and the poor innocent employer as just wanting to do what was right for everyone. Only workers have agency, the university was innocent. 🙃🙃🙃

Some people seem to have forgotten (or never realised) that the goal of parenting is to produce an adult who doesn’t need you. You achieve this gradually over 18 years (+ or - a few) Extra credit for having adult kids who actively want to spend time with you, seek your advice, etc.

There's no care for the journey through research being the key part of it, not the delivery, or a glossy report. Nor is there any appreciation that if you haven't learned, practiced, or refined key research skills you can't ask AI to do it nor interpret with any confidence what AI is telling you.
