Screenshot of an X post from the verified Governor Hochul Press Office account (@NYGovPress), reading: “Voluntary intoxication is not a license for sexual assault or gang rape. Period.”
Below the text is a paused, muted video showing New York Governor Kathy Hochul speaking behind a dark blue lectern bearing the state seal. She wears a navy blazer over a tan collared blouse. An American flag stands to her left, a New York State flag to her right, and a large gold state seal hangs behind her. The video timer shows 0:14. The NY Times has repeatedly used the phrase “to heel” in reference to Trump’s crackdown on universities, implicitly clarifying that Trump goal is to establish dominance. And what exactly constitutes this “woke” ideology in higher education?
During the meeting, Mr. Trump repeatedly complained about his administration’s failure to bring Harvard University in particular to heel. The administration has been unable to hammer out a deal with the nation’s oldest and wealthiest university, a central plank of his broader push against “woke” ideology in higher education.

In retirement, Thomas Jefferson saw this ideal as the "consolidationist" monarchism of Stuart kings and came to believe that it was--and would always be--a permanent problem in government, pushed by tyrants, the very wealthy, and church leaders obsessed with controlling public morality.

The provost of UMass (R1) literally told a group of historians this: “research” means pulling in large external grants and unless you do that, you don’t matter and get nothing internally. “Research“ is about $ and institutions support only those disciplines that bring in $ or raise it privately.

another researcher accuses OpenAI of training on conversations and then claiming a breakthrough
Valerio Capraro @ValerioCapraro
X.com
BREAKING: OpenAl might have stolen another major proot.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAl may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gábor Kun were working on Gromov's soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAl later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself. And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpöge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
Al is not discovering new mathematics.
Al is stealing human discovery.

Can't help but think of this hiker-rescue story I saw earlier today
The USFS said the climbers told them they had used an artificial intelligence platform, YouTube videos and AllTrails to plan the trip. They said they relied on Al to decide what food to bring and how much food and water they would need.

The group said it packed supplies for an eight-hour climb, not its roughly 16-hour ascent. The climbers said Al recommended simple carbohydrates instead of fats because fats "take too long to digest."

"We relied too much on Al rather than our own critical thinking," the group told rangers.
