My first @asanews.bsky.social was in 2013 when I had just gotten DACA & was able to dream of an academic career where I'd be able to work doing research, writing, & teaching. Today I do all of that, but I know the dreams of most w/ DACA remain out of reach. Until that changes, I have work to do.

Yesterday I learned my 2025 article on temporal liminality was cited for the 1st time by @drlizaaranda.bsky.social—humbled is an understatement! Today I received proofs for my forthcoming article on researching undocumented communities. Feeling energized to continue this work even amid so much pain.

Over the last year I've felt that so much of what we do in academia is of little consequence when people are suffering, even dying. This student reminded me that something we can do is expose students to the facts & give them tools to understand the world they're living in. *shared with permission.
Email from a student saying
Now that I am finally graduating, I just wanted to reach out and thank you again for making my experience at RIC so wonderful. Your Immigration & Justice class was one of the most invaluable courses I had the privilege of taking and I am so, so grateful for everything I learned during that time, especially with everything going on in the country right now. I also wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to assist with your research project, it meant a lot that you thought it was something I could take on. I hope that it is still going well or went well if you have finished it.
