What do you think "go all in" means? Here are some things on my mind: ✨ Tuition-free ✨ Education not entertainment ✨ Real vocational training ✨ Real liberal arts education ✨ Reinvestment in research ✨ Disinvestment from corporate pipelines

Because I hate reading e-books AND want to support the amazing @walshbr.bsky.social, I bought 2 physical copies of his book (one for me and one for my DH Initiative Co-Director, @kyliesago.bsky.social). Can’t wait to dig in!

Okay - googling shit is literally getting so useless right now. Bluesky pals, if you have good sources on the false promises of AI and how funding for these companies is basically all dream-based, please share them here?

reading this story and thinking about Sara Ahmed’s Complaint! which remains one of the best books I have read, full stop. Once the incident has occurred, she writes, there will be no satisfaction. No system implemented by the university exists to offer any.

Toast says hi
A calico cat with enormous green eyes stares directly into the camera from her perch sprawled at the top of a cat tree. One white front paw dangles in front of her and her tail stretches behind.

TECH BRO: GREAT NEWS! I THINK I WROTE THE COMPUTER PROGRAM THAT'S GOING TO KILL EVERYONE.

PANEL 2: MATTIE peers at the laptop, which just says KILL ALL HUMANS on it, with a blinking cursor. Another WOMAN runs away.
MATTIE: IT LOOKS LIKE YOU JUST TYPED A SENTENCE HERE ON THE LATPOP.
WOMAN: AHHH! DON'T LET IT NEAR THE NUKES!

PANEL 3: The TECH BRO shakes his head.
TECH BRO: NO. YOU CRETIN, YOU DON'T TRULY UNDERSTAND ITS CAPABILITIES.
TECH BRO: PLUS, IT'S SCRAPED FROM SOMEONE *ELSE* TYPING IT. IDIOT.

PANEL 4: A BUSINESSMAN hands the SCIENTIST a big bag of money. The space behind him is also filled with bags.

I have had some great teachers in this life, and she was the one who taught me what I could call the survival techniques to being a writer. I wouldn't have made it this far without her. I'm grateful to her, for her. Rest in peace, Annie.

There are few people who give me more hope for the future of education than @walshbr.bsky.social. Brandon's new book is sharp, generous, and helpful. If you are interested in teaching, higher education, or digital humanities, put this at the top of your reading list.

Embedded Pedagogies is out! Available freely online through @openbookpublish.bsky.social and for purchase in a variety of different formats. It's a tough time to teach, and it's easy to feel helpless. In this book I argue for an expansive view of teaching and the work it can do in the world.

My dissertation topic has been (obliquely) coming up a lot these days. Makes me wish I could let my 2015 self know that the rumors are true and highly specialized researched on niche academic subjects is in fact how we build the knowledge we need to understand the world we live in.

"What we see in ourselves and our peers is not a generation that lacks dedication or resilience. It is a generation that has looked at the contract academia offers—sacrifice now, security never, values optional—and begun asking whether it is worth signing. The current funding crisis has made that question urgent, but the question was already there."

Even if it were true that postdocs benefit from a bespoke mentor-mentee relationship, it wouldn't negate their rights to labor protections. But guess what! It's not. We wrote about this in the Postdoctoral Laborers Bill of Rights (2019): halperta.com/white%20pape...

A few years ago I published a resource: "Taking Action in Higher Ed." It's about assessing risk when making decisions to stand up for students & communities. If you've used this resource, can I ask: is there an exercise or section that you found particularly useful? halperta.com/shalperta%20...
