I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Here is the most important part, the mechanism that allows political appointees to override expert consensus on whether a proposal should be funded, so that the money can instead be directed to via a shell corporation to cocaine and yachts just like every other Trump venture.
Funding Mechanisms. The NSF merit review process remains the gold standard of grantmaking, but other models exist that may be better suited to identify particular types of meritorious research activities, such as projects that span disciplinary boundaries.1 NSF will experiment with various proposal review mechanisms, such as providing "Golden Tickets" that empower individual reviewers to champion exceptional proposals that may not survive panel consensus; employing distributed review to reduce administrative burden and speed time to decision; and developing new measures to identify and support novel research.2 Our goal in this experimentation is to surface high-potential ideas that may be too divisive for committee consensus and to attract higher-quality reviewers by empowering them to exercise independent scientific judgment, while ensuring every funded proposal meets a level of scientific rigor appropriate for Gold Standard Science.

Share Your Story: Impacts of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF)
Following the release of the President's Budget Request (PBR) on April 3rd, NSF quickly and quietly took steps to begin to dismantle the SBE Directorate. The Federation of Associations in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) wants to hear about how the SBE Directorate at NSF has supported your research and career. Your stories help FABBS communicate to policymakers and the public what’s at stake when the federal government fails to fund critical sciences. We may follow up for clarification, but we will not share your name or institution publicly without your permission.
