Swope said the "downside to this arrangement is that New Zealand is tied to a service and to equipment that it does not own," No shit Sherlock! #nzpol
Dependency downside
Swope said the downside of moving this way was dependency.

"If there is a downside to this arrangement [it] is that New Zealand is tied to a service and to equipment that it does not own," he said.

"And ultimately, depending on how the political winds could shift, which you can never really anticipate, that service could be shut off and there'd be nothing New Zealand could do about it."

The Iran drones dispute reported by Reuters further illustrates this.

Swope for his part gave examples of defence or security projects or services being shut off, or threatened with that, at Google, Microsoft and SpaceX in recent years.

you'd hope as minister or foreign affairs, winston peters, may care about how a new zealander on a valid green card has been kidnapped by ICE, and is now being held indefinitely in a prison in the middle of the mojave desert?
I am a NZ journalist currently based in the United States.

I have been writing about the case of Everlee Wihongi, a 36-year-old Kiwi who has been living in Wisconsin since she was age six. Her father moved to the US in the 90s, when NZ Rail was purchased by Wisconsin Central Rail. He was one of 12 train drivers brought over to bring their expertise to the United States.

Everlee got detained by ICE 16 days ago at LAX, and is now locked in an ICE facility in the middle of the Mojave Desert. She was entering the US legally - as she has for the last 30 years - on a valid green card.

She is in a cell with 46 other women, with no official idea why she is there or when she will get out.

As deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, and minister of foreign affairs, is your office looking into Ms Everlee's case at all?

I have also reached out to the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade for comment.

Two bills before parliament will replace the old census with a new and largely untested system. Such a big change deserves more expert and public scrutiny.
