Farmland bird populations in England have now declined by a staggering 66% since 1970, according to the latest official figures. What's going to turn this around? Not piecemeal grants or trusting in the 'custodians of the countryside', but Landscape Recovery & regulation www.gov.uk/government/s...
Graph from DEFRA's report 'Wild bird populations in the UK and England, 1970 to 2025', published 13th October 2026, showing a two-thirds decline in farmland birds in England and the UK from 1970 to 2025.

Mercantilism is really intuitively appealing. I think it's genuinely difficult to get people to recognize that a country's wealth just works differently than a person or company. I think this is the fundamental reason that we don't want businesspeople running the country.

A world in which societies can only remain stable with much higher levels of military and civil defence capacity than anticipated in the 1990s is going to involve a much wider degree of state intervention in the economy and efforts to sustain a social contract that secures the loyalty of citizens

One thing that Trumpism has made clear over and over again is that the global far right understands itself to be in a ideological alliance the helps itself across borders, and the center and left largely do not.

It really is worth noting that these are the spoiled children of the World War II generation, the ones who tore up the legacy their parents gave them and turned it into rental properties, nice cars and holidays. Enraged now, that their children don’t show them the respect they believe they deserve.

It’s genuinely difficult to articulate how evil destroying USAID was. And it’s weird bc some people are so committed to the US anti-imperial angle that they skip right over the “literally the worst excesses of capitalism, the world’s richest man just decided to turn off money to poor people” angle.

We must remember the Utøya massacre, and remember it for what it was: a far-right attack specifically targeted against democratic socialist activists. Today, the ideologies of its perpetrator are openly espoused by a global network of nationalist oligarchs as they wage war on democratic societies.

the concept of migration control is incredibly historically new and when it is abolished - and it will be abolished, like all unjust laws are - we will look back on it as if it was a complete insanity. what lunatic would say that your life should be restricted to a territory you were born in

Society isn't real, ideas aren't real, communities aren't real, civilization isn't real, ideology isn't real, race isn't real, gender isn't real---but people are real. Human beings are real, and every one of us matters. If that's not what the "Western Tradition" says, then what's the point of it?

the basic issue is that there is nothing preventing moderates from contesting seats with bad moderates. that's how Booker got into politics! it's just that somehow it has become moderate doctrine that the most corrupt shitheels in the party are entitled to their seat.

America had a model of scientific innovation that clearly worked and is now being attacked by people who don't understand science. The market will not just produce less science and train fewer scientists; it will also be less likely to share scientific breakthroughs for the public good.
Third, the private sector will not treat knowledge as a public good. Rapid scientific development requires that we share and disseminate the knowledge that we create. The private sector acts in proprietary ways to ensure they enhance profits. Federal research funding does the opposite. It requires scientists to widely share the innovations, tools, and data that they generate. For example, NSF spends a good portion of its budget funding shared resources, like telescopes or detailed data collection efforts. NIH behaves in a similar fashion. These resources are shared widely (with careful and rigorous protections for human subjects) across the scientific community and the private sector.

The fact that deportation has become the default expected outcome for anyone convicted of a serious offence in the UK who has any migration background is not a good thing, actually. It's one of the many points where an utterly toxic, racist political consensus has been reached among major parties.

This is insane policy. We already force car dependency on all ages just for basic mobility, and now we're removing the few safety checks we have left. Keeping people with decreased physical abilities behind the wheel of multi-ton vehicles is a recipe for disaster. People will die because of this.
