It doesn't explain his relationship to the rest of the human race but a big part of RFK Jr.'s broader damage is clearly trying to find out if he can die. I guess if I had lived a life like his and was somehow still around drinking out of puddles at 72 I'd have some questions on that as well.

Because of this story I can never give signed books to charity and if I buy one which turns out to have an inscription I feel bad for the signatory
The cautionary precedent is a story about George Bernard Shaw who, browsing in a second-hand shop somewhere, found one of his own works, inscribed for a friend "with esteem, GBS". Naturally, he bought it and returned it to the same friend, "with renewed esteem"

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Early in his career, William Randolph Hearst famously joked that if his papers kept losing $1 million a year, he'd lose all his money in 60 years. If the Post continues to lose $100 million a year, it will take Jeff Bezos 2000 years to lose his money.

there is a way in which this is even an explicit repudiation of the constitution itself, created not to pass some european idea of "nationhood" down to posterity, but to pass *republican self-government* down to posterity.

Mastodon partial thread from November 14th 2024:

They are planning on rounding up folks by the millions, they have ideas for sending the national guard from republican states into democrat states that refuse to do it. So what the fuck? Are you going to have national guardsmen fight each other? What the fuck is this fucking nightmare?

And what is the fucking alternative?
You're going to just sit there while folks are day trading the stocks of concentration camps?

I hate all of this. Fuck.

My favorite evergreen Molly Ivins quote: "I prefer someone who burns the flag and then wraps themselves up in the Constitution over someone who burns the Constitution and then wraps themselves up in the flag."
Molly Ivins, dressed in a sort of satin blouse with a neckthing that I'm going to call a scarf?. She's smiling with every cell in her body. Beaming radiantly the joy of being righteous and kind at the same time. Her eyes closed almost to a squint, and every pearly white on display. Gods bless you, Molly, you were a hell of a person.

When I was in college they taught me that capitalism means that there are capitalists, who own productive resources, like say factories, and they hire people to make stuff and then sell it. They can't pay their workers so much that they don't make a profit, but they have to pay them at least enough
that they can afford to buy the stuff the factory produces. Feudalism, in contrast, is when you just take your profits directly by charging rent, fees and dues, turning people into
debt peons, or otherwise shaking them down. Nowadays the vast majority of corporate profits don't come from making or selling things but from "finance," which is a euphemism for other peoples' debts-charging rents, fees,
interest and whatnot. It's feudalism in the classic definition:
"direct juro-political extraction" as they sometimes put it.

Was reminded of Bentham’s argument that fear of crime can be a worse harm than crime itself. Everyone can be affected by fear of crime but relatively few people experience serious crime. And fear of crime can easily be manipulated for nefarious purposes.

Here's what the left's Steven Miller would do: 1. Leverage the DoJ to ruthlessly investigate corruption in the federal judiciary starting with re-opening Kavanaugh's file to find out who paid off his loans and seeing active indictments against Clarence Thomas.
