Since we’re doing another round of “AI will destroy humanity” doom-hype, it’s a good time to announce a new paper myself and my postdoc advisor just had accepted by BioSocieties on just this. TL;DR: almost all the “AI can make bioweapons” literature comes ultimately from the Effective Altruists.

This has been a very loud message at any roundtable we've done with industry representation over the last few years: startups can do well until they reach a certain size, then they begin to struggle due to lack of sustained funding beyond series a and either leave the UK or are sold.

This is getting a huge response on twitter, including from people I follow who are taking it at face value. As far as I can tell, it's fake. Trump said nothing like this in his public appearances yesterday. People *really* need to be more cautious of unsourced quotes that play to their assumptions.

Cold calling doesn't work for me because of who I am as a person but I actually have started scheduling regular calls with some of my friends who live abroad and it's the best. We treat these regular calls with the same seriousness of an in-person plan and it has deepened our relationships.

Yup. I bet these new #nuclear startups are basically vehicles for grift. I highly doubt techbros promising "100x faster construction" or "10x cheaper energy" while chugging raw milk are going to revolutionise the #energy industry. More likely they poison the well for all serious contenders too.

The most underappreciated fact about nuclear weapons is their near uselessness. Aside from deterring nuclear or other existential attack against oneself, their stated roles have limited credibility and are more trouble than they’re worth.

As James says, there isnt a huge amount new here *but*... ... I'm pretty concerned by the way the govt is continually signalling its stepping back from Net Zero and climate action. It's our strongest appeal to younger, Green voters and we are rapidly undercutting that. Starmerism but harder
