One of the most interesting debates in current international security is the degree to which we’re reliant on undersea cables and the degree to which these aren’t at all protected! I spoke to @katjabego.bsky.social about her excellent new book on the subject. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/b...

One tricky aspect of the rekindled rejoin debate is its timing. France and others are about to have their most consequential elections for Europe in decades. If the impression is created that leaving the EU can be “easily” reversed - that weakens one big hurdle for many hesitant far right voters.

If we want European alternatives to gain traction, we need to use them. That’s the sovereignty premium we should all be willing to pay: accept “good enough”, otherwise solutions can never achieve scale, improve, find a customer base. Embed Mistral, not Claude, etc. www.politico.eu/article/eu-m...

Just noticed that Brits will refer to their prime ministers by their first names (Andy, Keir, Boris). Americans do the same, but with their tech billionaires (Dario, Elon, Sam) instead. Quite fitting.

Though much remains unclear (including the culprit), today's foiled attack on RAF Fairford illustrates once more that the risk calculus behind "hybrid" operations (more brazen, more lethal) has changed. I was interviewed by NBC earlier this week on this exact topic: www.nbcnews.com/world/europe...
nbcnews.com
Europe frets as the Kremlin pushes the limits of its hybrid warfare
Moscow has long embraced tactics that straddle the threshold of war, but a string of increasingly brazen incidents has alarmed U.S. allies, who fear what could be next.

The OpenAI Navier-Stokes controversy - did the company steal mathematicians’ nearly-finished proofs fed into its models - surely must have massive ramifications beyond the incident itself. Which company will still believe the claim that their proprietary data and ideas don’t get hoovered up/reused?

European success stories like this one - whether in space, tech, defence - have turned from a trickle into a steady stream. The continent is making real progress, on many fronts. Far more is needed of course, but we should be celebrating the good things a lot more too (and learn from them!).

Historically high turnout in Saxony-Anhalt so far. We shouldn't over-extrapolate, but I would wager that the AfD voters in this case are the more complacent ones (they'll almost certainly win), whereas the counter-vote is highly motivated to go vote and try and stave off an AfD absolute majority.
