and honestly, losing either statewide race in texas is something close to a strategic defeat. it completely upsets the political map going forward. it would be similar to trump winning new jersey in 2024 (where he came close).

It’s late here so I’m not going to do a thread about this, but re pneumonic plague, it can be treated with gentamicin, any number of fluoroquinolones (eg., ciprofloxacin), and tetracyclines. It’s also not very contagious, despite the name.

Re this story, many people relate to national politics the same way a fair number of 'high information' voters relate to local politics–they know very little and are voting either for or against the status quo ('throw the bums out'). Not excusing this, but that's the reality. 1/x

Would be curious if they're winding down other divisions in a similar way but on a slower time table. The number of grants provided by the Geosciences division was halved this year compared to prior years, the *explicit expectation* is for it to be halved again next year. Comparing notes is good.

An OK Week for D.C.’s Crime Stats
As of 9am Friday, there was one homicide in D.C. this week. To date this year, D.C. has reported a total of 72* homicides this year. Last year, during the same time period, we had 107 homicides, and in the surge year of 2023, there were 212 homicides during that same time period. Other crime categories bounced around a bit, with no real strong shifts.

Again, if the 🇺🇸 media covered the GOP as it actually is, & the way foreign far right authoritarian parties are covered, behavior like this would spark a wholesale change in 🇺🇸 political journalism. This? It won’t even make headlines tomorrow, & the Sunday shows will platform a dozen GOP politicians.

time.com/article/2026... > a failed impeachment effort, a party leader suggested privately, risks being framed as approval I don't know if they got jeffries on deep background here or what 'waiting for a dem speaker' is strategic I guess but they're underweighting the impact of courage, as always
That has not deterred some Democrats from moving ahead on all paths. Rep. Al Green, the Texas Democrat who has introduced multiple articles of impeachment against Trump dating back to 2017, says the outcome matters less than the signal it sends. “There are people who believe that it should only be done at a certain time when you have a certain amount of people in Congress that you can be assured that you will get the impeachment articles through. This is not the case,” Green tells TIME. “Impeachment is what we can do to express our disapproval of a President’s behavior.”Larson tells TIME he coincidentally filed his impeachment resolution just before Trump threatened to annihilate the Iranian civilization, which legal experts have said could amount to war crimes, and that he had been planning the effort for more than a year. He says that he “wanted it to serve as an example” of how Democrats are holding Trump accountable, though he did not ask Jeffries to back the impeachment effort and says that Leadership has made clear they have concerns about how such a vote would be perceived. A failed impeachment effort, a party leader suggested privately, risks being framed as tacit approval of the President’s conduct, while also diverting attention from the party’s core economic message on affordability and health care—issues party leaders believe resonate more directly with voters.

If the lessons Democrats (& democrats) draw from DOGE is “right idea, wrong implementation,” we are doomed. Everyone involved in the unprecedented crime that was DOGE needs to go to jail forever, & Democrats need to rebuild all of the programs & agencies first, not do digital management consulting 🤦‍♂️
