Private companies are pouring billions into automating the worst way to move around a city. Self-driving cars don't solve traffic, they just create autonomous traffic jams for profit. Proven solutions already exist. Walkability, bikes, and public transit. Done.

14 hours later and my mentions are still full of angry treatises about badly behaved cyclists. Bike lanes are not a reward for good cyclist behavior! They are infrastructure proven to make cities safer for ALL ROAD USERS. Whatever way cyclists have wronged you is irrelevant to the discussion!

I really love @nyc-dot.bsky.social #SummerStreets but the NYPD presence this year is over the top. Really kills the vibe.
A random intersection where a one-way street meets Broadway in Upper Manhattan, unnecessarily blocked by unmarked police cruisers and a police van. It was like this at every street. Couldn't they have just used old-fashioned barricades?Another one-way street meeting Broadway. This one has two marked NYPD SUVs and a marked NYPD van blocking the street. PS, the vehicles were all idling. Two marked NYPD cruisers block the Summer Streets route up Broadway at 125th St, leaving just a narrow gap for cyclists to squeeze through.A marked NYPD cruiser blocks the path of Summer Streets along West 110th St. There are two small gaps on either side, and two kids on bikes have split up and decided to each go a different direction around the car.

When I see "Waymo saves lives" op-eds, I always do a quick search to see what the author has written extolling protected bike lanes. Or automatic speed cameras. Or road diets. The results are always the same: Nope. Nada. Zilch.

I cannot proclaim loud enough the joy it brings me (and Jack!) for Jack to bike himself the couple of miles every day to summer camp. He’s not being taken to camp. He’s getting himself there on his own power. That’s huge for a 7 year old.

Maybe it’s the dude from Jersey in the shiny Super Duty running a red light just to block the crosswalk that’s the real problem and not e-bikes, but who’s to say, really.
A stupid-big maroon pick-up truck stopped over a crosswalk on a Manhattan street, forcing pedestrians to walk in front of its huge menacing hood, which is almost as tall as a grown-ass man, just to get across the street.

Truly wild research on the change in bike mode share in NYC, London, Paris and Berlin. Between 2000 and 2023, Paris went from 1 out of every 100 trips being on a bike to *one out of 9!* Many people, including credible researchers, would have told you that that *could not* happen.
Figure 1. Bicycle share of trips in New York City, London, Paris, and Berlin, 1990–2023. Note: the actual years vary slightly by city, as follows: New York: 1990,2000, 2010, 2019, 2022; London: 1993, 2000, 2010, 2019, 2022; Paris: 1990, 2000, 2010, 2017, 2023; Berlin: 1992, 1998, 2010, 2018, 2023. The percentages shown in thegraphic refer to the bicycle share of all trips, all trip purposes, based on travel surveys for each city. Sources: City of Paris, 2000–2023; City of Berlin, 2003–2025;Kalender,2012; NYCDOT, 2018–2023; Pucher, Parkin, et al.,2021; TfL, 2000–2023.This paper compares trends in cycling levels, cyclist demographics and cycling injury risk in NewYork, London, Paris and Berlin, before and after the COVID pandemic. We explore these trends inthe context of changes to policy and infrastructure before, during, and after COVID. We based ouranalysis on data from published reports, open-data portals, government websites, travel surveys, and information provided by transport planners in each city. Cycling levels in NYC, London, Paris, and Berlin increased over the three decades prior to COVID (1990–2019). As a percentage of dailytrips, bike mode share rose from 0.6% to 2.2% in New York, from 1.2% to 3.7% in London, from0.4% to 5% in Paris, and from 7% to 18% in Berlin. Cycling rates have continued to increase sinceCOVID. By 2023, bike mode shares had risen further to 3% in NYC, 4.5% in London, 11% in Paris, and 19% in Berlin. Cycling became safer in all four cities over the period 2005 to 2023, withdeclining per-trip fatality and injury rates. More and better cycling infrastructure has been acornerstone of pro-cycling efforts, especially cycleways separated from motor vehicle traffic (pro-tected bike lanes). Bike parking and bikesharing systems have expanded and improved. Car restric-tions and traffic calming have complemented pro-bike measures, for example, using infrastructureand enforcement to reduce traffic volumes and speeds in residential neighborhoods. Long-termpolitical support as well as cycling advocacy organizations have been critical to the introductionand continuation of pro-bike policies and the necessary financial investments.

Learning to ride a bike is a child's first taste of independence. Cities need to honor that milestone by building human-first infrastructure that actually gives kids the autonomy to ride safely, completely protected from the threat of motorists and their oversized, overpowered cars.

Even if we're to believe that the kid "ran from his mom and into the street before he was hit," as the cops claim, we need streets that allow kids to be kids. As @sgoodyear.bsky.social says, children "dart." That's what they do. Lower speed limits enforced by design would prevent these tragedies.

Gotta call bullshit. Note how this concern is never brought up for one-way, one-lane streets with no bike lane with parking on both sides leaving no room for drivers to pull over to make way for emergency vehicles. Same thing with big arterials such as Flatbush or Atlantic that are often jammed.
"It reduces the real estate in that street," said Woods, who made $271,476 last year, according to city records. "When you have curb, eight feet of bike lane, three-foot bumper, nine-foot travel lane, parked cars, [drivers] can't pull over to the right, and we can't go around that traffic to go into oncoming traffic because they can't pull over to the right, either. So that's a big, big obstacle for us ... as well as laddering the building."
