It's widely known as far from perfect, but the American Community Survey includes the ONLY annual estimate we get about how much bicycling is happening in the United States The indefinite delay will mean even less timely information about how people get to work, including whether they bike

Last week, the Secretary of Transportation sent a letter asking Congress to restrict almost all federal transportation funding for bike lanes, and instead fund bike lane removals. This is just the latest escalation in the administration's war on bike lanes. Take action: bikeleague.org/action-center
Graphic promoting "NEW BLOG: The real threat behind the administration’s Transportation Reauthorization recommendations by Caron Whitaker"

An illustration of a cyclist's POV as they ride up to a blocked bike lane with a "road closed ahead" sign. Above the illustration is text:

"Last week, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy sent a letter outlining the administration’s priorities for the next Transportation Reauthorization bill to the Senate.

In it, he asked Congress to restrict the ability to use any and all transportation funds for building bike lanes, and to instead make funds available to take out bike lanes.""This is just the most recent escalation of the administration’s war on bike lanes.
January 2025: Grants for bike safety projects are frozen. Grantees are asked to remove bike facilities from proposed projects to get funding.
November 2025: Chairman Graves of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee states, "We’re not going to be spending money on ... bike paths or walking paths [in the next transportation bill].”
March 2026: The administration tried to remove DC’s 15th Street bike lane (spoiler alert: we won the court case protecting it) as a test case to restrict bike lanes on National Highway System roads.
July 2026: Secretary Sean Duffy says he’s defunded “DEI bike lanes” and put $1.7 billion towards “real” projects
Now: Duffy is asking Congress to restrict almost all federal transportation funding for bike lanes, instead asking Congress to fund bike lane removals.""What do we do?
Focus on Congress. It is Congress’s job to be a check on the administration, and they have a very powerful tool to do so: the next reauthorization bill.

We must ensure Congress knows how important biking infrastructure is to their constituents (that’s you!) and ask them to ensure the USDOT follows the law. That means allowing the funding Congress intended for bicycling and walking to go to local priorities and local governments.

Congress is working from home in August and then again in October. This is a great time to meet with them in their district office, or invite them for a bike ride or infrastructure tour. And we have resources to help you do that.

SEND A MESSAGE TO CONGRESS: bikeleague.org/action-center"

TELL CONGRESS: USDOT should put safety first! bikeleague.org/action-center🚨 Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) removed bike lanes, road diets, and speed management from their Proven Safety Countermeasures website.
Proven safety countermeasures are lighthouses to guide officials towards safer roadway designs. They rest on a mountain of evidence. They are prominent and illuminating, suggesting the most effective infrastructure for solving our nation’s traffic death crisis.

By taking down these strategies, the Federal Highway Administration is effectively telling states and local governments that they no longer encourage states and local governments to invest in safety!
USDOT needs to explain why it is putting politics ahead of safety.
On Friday, Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), ranking Democrat on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee released a statement asking for a briefing from the USDOT about why these safety measures are no longer encouraged, adding that “It’s not political to say bike lanes and speed cameras improve safety; it’s a statement of fact.”

We need your help in amplifying Rep. Larsen’s message. Please ask your member of Congress to join Rep. Larsen in asking for a briefing. We deserve an explanation on why the administration is erasing protections for vulnerable road users.

It was great to talk to @davidzipper.bsky.social for this essay I'm proud of the @bikeleague.org's work with @waymo.bsky.social and I'm hopeful that Waymo will address this issue This example puts a point on how hard "better than human" is to prove, and how that still may not be enough

People on bikes rest in the shade of a big green tree. "#ActivePeople" is tagged at the top, and a text box at the bottom says "Did you know? July is National Parks and Recreation Month! It's a great time to make the outdoors your gym—take some time to get out there and explore your nearest parks (camping emoji) (bike emoji)"
