This is a Band-winged Meadowhawk (Sympetrum semicinctum). They’re doing well in many parts of their range but I was sad to learn they are listed as “imperiled” in Saskatchewan #invertebrates

Yeah! Eat all those mosquitos, Emperor dragonfly! I love you #smaugust #dragon #nature #animal #insect #entomology #art #digitalart #dragonfly
Painterly, cel-shaded art of a blue emperor dragonfly delicately landing, one foot first, on an isometric chunk of water with sticks and other vegetation in it. The dragon's wings and the surface of the water flicker from an unseen sun. I didn't draw any mosquitos with the dragonfly but that's because it already ate them all. Watermark: http://hmcgill.art

Even if this weren't obviously fake, these folks really have no idea how easy it is to grow algae. Like. Go put some tap water in a clear glass and stick it in a sunny window. You'll most likely have algae within a week.

Had to make a pond pattern featuring some of my favorite guys!! 🐸🪷
A tiled pattern of various pond animals and water lilies with yellow flowers. The animals featured are mostly invertebrates and herps, such as a dragonfly, damselfly, water bug, caddisfly larva, water beetles, water strider, dragonfly larva, tadpole, rough-skinned newt, and pacific tree frog. There are small duckweed plants interspersed in between. They are illustrated on a blue-teal background.

antlion larvae often 'play dead' when disturbed, and often 'wake' when pinched or blown on... but not when bits are cut off. curious. the results of experiment 4 shouldn't've been surprising however...
"Since the pinching of a leg, and even attempts to lift the letisimulating antlion by a leg, usually terminates the front, I was surprised at the results produced by the following mutilations.
Experiment 1. With a pair of small, but sharp, dissecting scissors, I cut off the tip of a fore-leg of a letisimulating antlion.
The insect did not respond.
Experiment 2. With a pair of small, but sharp, dissecting scissors, I clipped off the tip of a mandible of a letisimulating antlion.
The insect did not respond.
Experiment 3. With a pair of small, but sharp, dissecting scissors, in rapid succession, I cut off the tips of both fore-legs and of a mandible of a letisimulating antlion.
The insect did not respond.
Experiment 4. With a pair of small, but sharp, scissors I severed the head from the body of a letisimulating antlion.
The insect did not respond, nor did it recover from the operation."

A day at the pond 🐢🪷
An illustration featuring various species found in a western North American pond. There is a western pond turtle basking on a gray piece of wood in the pond. A cross section of water shows a California red-legged frog, diving beetle, tadpoles, and a rough skinned newt + newt larva swimming around. The bottom of the pond has hornwort plants, leaf litter, and algae-covered stones. Growing around the pond edges are cattails, rush, water plantain, a water lily, and a flowering Douglas iris. A yellow and black dragonfly is flying over the pond, while a vivid dancer blue damselfly and green pacific tree frog are resting on the iris. They are all illustrated with vibrant colors on a teal blue background.

Ferocious predator of the water
Close-up photo of a bluet standing on the tip of a spiky green leaf facing the camera directly. The bluet has a dumbbell shaped head with enormous orange and cream striped eyes. It's face is black, cream and metallic orange with electric blue "eyebrows". There are three simple eyes arranged in a triangle in the center of its face. It's a strange but also aesthetically pleasing face.

meanwhile at Florida Museum of Natural History: "curator of artificial intelligence" has determined that climate change is bad
"Left to its own devices, even rice — with its proclivity for heat — would almost certainly be unable to keep up. With the help of humans, who carefully breed and genetically engineer new varieties, it’s possible rice will be able to cope. But, said Nicolas Gauthier, curator of artificial intelligence at the Florida Museum of Natural History, the best-case scenario is not something anyone’s looking forward to.
“These changes are going to be disruptive, and the process of adaptation doesn’t come for free. It has to be done with intention and might not be pleasant,” he said.
Gauthier is the lead author of a new study that combines data from multiple scientific disciplines to predict the possible future for rice — or lack thereof — in a rapidly warming world. The prognosis is grim."

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a blue poison dart frog is posing confidently for two of his frog friends, who are both brown. One friend says, “whoa, dude!” And the other remarks, “nice paint job!” Panel 2: the blue frog, striking another pose, replies, “thanks. It’s designed to keep predators away.” Panel 3: a heron - without giving it a second thought - tosses the blue frog into its mouth and thinks to itself, “nice, blue flavor!” The two other frogs can only watch and scream in horror.

Photo by Daryl Duda of a balloonfish, which is a type of porcupinefish. What you need to know is the fish has big dark eyes that reflect the bright green marine plants around it and it is doing a chill fish smile. Lil spikes on top, some stripes. Suggestions of some facial hair. Very high charisma.
