I worked for a CEO who managed to charm most staff because he had two skills: 1: The superficial charm of a politician visiting a factory. 2: The ability to remember the first name & one fact ("Joe! Still going fly fishing?") of every member of staff. This largely disguised his 24-carat bastardry.

The snobbishness about this comes in part from the fact you can no longer pay all your bills doing a minimum wage job. If you work 35hrs a week you should be able to pay rent, pay utilities, buy food & have a little left over for a few beers on a Friday. This never used to be a controversial view.
