My favourite Annie Dillard quote, from THE WRITING LIFE

Who will teach me to write? a reader wanted to know.

The page, the page, that eternal blankness, the blankness of eternity which you cover slowly, affirming time’s scrawl as a right and your daring as necessity; the page, which you cover woodenly, ruining it, but asserting your freedom and power to act, acknowledging that you ruin everything you touch but touching it nevertheless, because acting is better than being here in mere opacity; the page, which you cover slowly with the crabbed thread of your gut; the page in the purity of its possibilities; the page of your death, against which you pit such flawed excellences as you can muster with all your life’s strength: that page will teach you to write.

I figured out the notes, wrote them up in a way that makes sense for when I return to them over the weekend (I even put things in some sort of order, although I'm not 100% sure it's right), and then I wrote an entire paragraph. NOW I get to try to go to sleep.

The Connecticut Sun's final game is tonight. Connecticut and its fans bought into the WNBA at its low point, turning a profit when the NBA's owners saw the league as a moneypit, only to lose their team now that everyone sees big bucks in women's sports. Some thoughts on the setting of the Sun:

Surprisingly, moving the team to Connecticut worked. In 2010, the Sun became the first WNBA team to turn a profit — during a global recession, and during the league’s nadir of popularity. The casino in the middle of nowhere became a fortress. The Sun has won 64.5 percent of its home games. It developed a real fanbase and made four WNBA Finals.

The Connecticut Sun is not the first WNBA team to die. (Enjoy this haunting image of the mascots for the Sacramento Monarchs, Utah Starzz, Detroit Shock, and yes, the Houston Comets, hanging out, smiling, not realizing that death will soon come for them.)

But it’s the first WNBA team to die for this reason: Not because nobody cared, not because it couldn’t make money, not because it couldn’t find fans or win games, not because the league is shrinking … but actually because the league is growing. The Sun helped the WNBA survive, but the period of mere survival is over. The league is moving on to bigger markets and bigger money and leaving Connecticut behind.

how to get anywhere in the area, you will likely need to transfer through Skipton. (also how the buses are free for them. their delight when they told us the full cost of their trip!) anyway it was a good time. I ate good food and stepped way out of my wheelhouse and challenged myself and yeah.

sometimes you can walk across a field, thinking of all the people who have done so before. or you can say hello to a stranger. a stranger's dog. make a friend for a day or talk to two elderly Geordie women who explain how they've transitioned to traveling by bus on their annual Yorkshire holiday.

and there are sheep. (one black sheep in particular followed me along a wall. popping up every so often.) there are cows and birds and goats and hares and trees and sun and rain. rivers and lakes and bogs and dales and fells and moors. (there are flying insects, both miraculous and annoying.)

it was—at one point I cried, walking alone along the river, at how big everything is. how vast. how—I don't know, it was the perfect way to end one year and build toward the next. a reminder that the world is terrifying, yes, and there is so much work to be done. but the world is also amazing.

saw 5786 out by walking not-quite-80-miles along the Dales Way (not quite because I took a bus one afternoon due to feeling ill—which, look, not trying to power through is what we call growth—although I also walked extra miles due to my inability to escape Grassington so actual mileage is very ???)

tell me about it! I saw someone complaining that Mrs Hall potentially getting to do more for the village was the end of the world, which is when I realized a) we are not watching the same show and b) my blocks are in no way robust enough... like I ship AxS, but I love the whole show

haven't been hit this hard since Carrie Fisher passed. Carrie and Dolly, two queens who forged their own paths and were always in on the joke and always, always cared. they didn't think caring was uncool, ever. Peerless artists too. RIP to Dolly, a legendary person, in addition to everything else. 💔
