Perhaps the most honest media advisory re: the D.C. Council ever circulated, courtesy of @brianneknadeau.bsky.social's staff:
WHEN & WHERE
Wilson Building, Council Chamber
Tuesday, October 6
Timing: All time predictions for Council meetings are speculative and foolhardy. The Legislative Meeting is scheduled to start at noon but never starts on time. The bill is the second item on the non-consent agenda and likely to be heard early in the meeting. The bill could come up for discussion during the Breakfast Meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m., which will not start at 9 a.m. The bill is not on the agenda for the Council of the Whole meeting, which precedes the Legislative Meeting.

i hate digger and i love how much i hate digger. i am going to see the movie again in two days with more friends. it is climate change freddy got fingered
'Digger' review
The first 20 minutes of the film set up a brilliant comedy that skewers our modern lives today. And then it spends about 2 hours making us feel awful for thinking the first 20 minutes were good, on purpose, over and over again. It is a joyless, colorless film that poorly parodies Citizen Kane and Dr.
Strangelove intentionally, making a mockery of essentially all modern American liberal political commentary and comedy. And a parody of a parody is interesting but uncomfortable and challenging to watch.A parody of Donald Trump today is neither funny nor poignant and the movie knows that. By the film's conclusion, you're left wondering whether spending big budgets to make climate films at all makes any sense. It
would be reductive as well to say the film inspires you to take on the actual
catastrophe outside, because its so confident in its future of doom that really, you're only left with a wordless unease about the idea of apocalypse fiction itself. To watch "Digger" is to experience a deeply miserable punk rock waste of more than one hundred million dollars, à la Freddy Got Fingered - but you will not laugh, unless you're laughing at yourself for being in the theater at all.I enjoyed Digger, and then I hated Digger, and then I enjoyed hate-watching Digger, and then I felt weird because the movie flat out told me to feel disgusting for enjoying hate-watching Digger, and to like hating myself, and I didn't want to listen to that part, and that's the point. Andy Kaufman couldn't have done it better. The Wolf of Wall Street tried to pull this trick and failed. Vice and Don't Look Up both tried to pull this trick and failed. So many other meta-media films have tried to do this recently and they're boring because they are entertaining. Digger is so boring, and frustrating, and uncomfortable, and that's why it works, and I hate that, too, which I also love.Digger will be a massive commercial flop and then go to streaming where it'll be remembered as a cult classic forever. I will watch this movie again and again, and I will find new things to hate to love and love to hate. I couldn't recommend it more highly to anyone who wants to see a piece of ridiculous high-budget avant garde mistakenly promoted as a mass appeal "dark comedy" because it stars Tom Cruise. And yet even the inaccurate PR is part of the point of Digger, to reel you in with precisely the bait it wants to chide you for taking.

Earlier this evening a federal jury struck down a brazenly unconstitutional traffic stop scheme "that turned mass surveillance of American drivers into a pipeline of pretextual traffic stops and unconstitutional searches." ij.org/press-releas...
The unconstitutional program ran in five steps: First, surveillance cameras across the state and country recorded license plates and logged when and where cars went. Second, analysts and anonymous tipsters flagged ordinary travel, like driving toward the border and back, as suspicious. Third, Bexar County sheriff’s deputies invented a traffic violation to justify pulling over the flagged driver. Fourth, deputies pulled drivers into their front seats, interrogated them and asked consent to search their car. Finally, fifth, if the driver refused to consent to a search, a K-9 alert from a manipulated dog supplied the probable cause to search anyway. This practice happened for four years to countless motorists.

SHOPPER.BMF
A silhouette of a woman shopping, her arms full of packages. Rebecca Harkness hurries down a street crowded with Christmas shoppers. A street corner Santa rings a bell, and the minty smell of candy canes hangs in the air. Rebecca can barely contain her excitement. She was standing outside the jewelry store, eyeing a diamond ring in the window display, when a little man dressed as a Christmas elf appeared next to her. The ring is nice, no?—he says to her with a faint German accent. Your man, he will give this to you, I am sure of it. Rebecca looked down at the small man. His costume was extraordinarily authentic. The elfin ears were fleshy and alive, nothing like the cheap waxy molds Santa’s helpers usually wear. Your man—the elf says to her—he will give you the ring, I promise, but you must promise something in return. Something to me. Rebecca Harkness says, Absolutely, I promise. And she giggles, thrilled with this portent of things to come. Rebecca Harkness soon forgets her own promise and makes her way home, nearly skipping like a schoolgirl.

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
