ARMY379.BMF
The silhouette of a soldier in Northumberland looking at the woods to the west, his M-16 assault rifle positioned at 10 o’clock. There’s something there. Under his helmet and heavy field jacket his skin prickles. The hairs on his neck stand on end. Shivering, he waves the rifle and his finger tightens on the trigger. Who’s there, he shouts. A cackle rises from the dark woods, jagged and piercing. When something does emerge from the woods, it’s a blur, a shimmering force radiating fecundity and malevolence. The force knocks the soldier to the earth before he can react. The rifle flies from his hand and his teeth fly from his mouth, thirty-two white stones spinning in the air only to disappear an instant later. The soldier nearly blacks out in pain and only vaguely hears another cackle recede deep into the woods to the west.

CROUCH.BMF
The silhouette of man crouching, as if standing on the edge of a precipice. Which in fact he is. Elias Thorne has descended his lighthouse and crossed the rocky promontory. He stands on the cliff overlooking the sea and crouches down. It’s a cliche to say he stares out at the edge of the world. Also inaccurate. What he stares out at is the start of the world, the mother of all things.

MAAS1.BMF
A color portrait of left-handed designated hitter Kevin Maas, who played for the New York Yankees. Maas’s rookie season in 1990 was remarkable. His home runs were so reliable that female groupies in the right field stands would remove their tops—jokingly called Maas tops by the media—whenever Maas hit a home run, dancing topless in the stands while Maas ran around the bases. Maas’s subsequent seasons were unremarkable and he left the major leagues in 1995. Maas is a divorced father of two now, working as a financial consultant at Charles Schwab.

VERNONL1.BMF
A color portrait of a 50ish brunette woman with dark eyes, adorned with pearls. This is Lisbeth Vernon, distant descendant of Sir George Vernon, whose family had built Haddon Hall in Derbyshire in the 14th century. Sir George Vernon appears to have had absolute control over his subjects in the early 15th century. He was known as “King of the Peak” and would routinely execute local men without a trial, hanging them in field still known today as Gallows Acres. Lisbeth, whose knowledge of her own family history is hazy, has a recurring nightmare about a Derbyshire gate keeper hung in a desolate field for the crime of murder. The gate keeper was innocent.

PLATE35.BMF
A herald, the top half blue, the bottom half white, with a white merlon thrusting up into the blue. Christine designed this shield as a favor for a friend in Middle Kingdom chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Though truth be told, the friend was soon after kicked out of the SCA, when it was discovered that his costumes for the coronation of the Middle Kingdom’s new king and queen featured swastikas woven into the trim of his raiments. The friend didn’t mind being kicked out. He’s discovered a new form of live action role playing.

A caricature of American singer, actor, and comedian Sammy Davis, Jr. Davis was one of the first black men to have a long-lived and successful career in the white entertainment industry. Lou remembers one of Davis’s movies from the sixties. Ocean’s 11, the Rat Pack in all its glory. Or at least that’s how Lou remembered it until he watched the film again in 1985. You know, he told Dianne, it really wasn’t that good. I guess you could say it didn’t age well, he says a few weeks later, still thinking about how the movie didn’t live up to his memory. Nothing ever does, jokes Dianne.

HYPNOTIZ.BMF
A New Yorker-style cartoon of woman working at a computer. A hand extends out from the monitor dangling a pocket watch, and a voice from the monitor drones, “You’re getting sleepy…sleeepy.” Obviously the woman isn’t on the internet, otherwise instead of growing sleepy, she’d be outraged or bored. Most likely both at the same time. In fact, this is Anderson’s secretary, nodding off during a game of Minesweeper. The game will soon be disrupted (as will her reverie) when Anderson explodes from his office, a rubber ducky in his hand, shouting, It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming. He begins grabbing books from the shelves, flinging them across the office. A casebook of patent law hits the secretary in the forehead, most definitely waking her up. It will take five security guards to restrain Anderson.

The branch insignia of the U.S. Army Medical Specialists Corps, showing a caduceus—a winged staff with two intertwining snakes—overlayed with a dark “S” for “Specialist.” Four medical professions serve in the Specialists Corps: physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and physician assistants. It’s Lt. Threadgold, the company dietitian, who discovers the mucus-like substance scraped from the outermost interior walls of the 40-meter-long sea snail shell is not only edible, but seems to possess curative properties, healing eczema and psoriasis, not to mention fading scars both old and new. Lt. Threadgold also discovers that the deeper into the spiral shell the mucus is harvested, the more potent it is. Gastropod giganticism, she marvels, might be a godsend to the beauty industry. It is not.

She can. She starts by ditching the heels and the skirt suit. And the white blonde lady while she’s at it.

GOGGLES.BMF
A pair of red swimming goggles with tinted lenses. The goggles appear as a mid-credit scene in the underground film “Clip/Art Film.” Which is odd, because this 24-hour film, which consists entirely of hand-held shots of thousands of pieces of clipart, was written and directed anonymously. There’s not even a credit to Allan Smithee. The credits—director, cinematographer, producer, writer, grip, foley, and so on—are empty, except for one. Bratz dolls are credited with the catering. Presumably this is because “Clip/Art Film” was released in 2001 via USB flash drives illicitly stuffed inside Bratz doll boxes sold at Toys ‘R’ Us and other retailers. The 320x240 resolution, while acceptable at the time, is now considered to be low quality, and numerous Kickstarter campaigns have launched over the years to remake an HD version of “Clip/Art Film,” though every campaign mysteriously disappears from the internet before concluding.

4THJULY.BMF
What this is, is, Mark can’t explain. It’s U.S. Independence Day-related for sure, what with the star and stripes and 4th of July logo. But is it a drum of some sort? A weird hat? A decorative cup? Who knows. It summons a vague childhood memory of a 4th of July celebration on the town green. A picnic basket. A bandstand. Fireworks. People shouting. Sirens. People screaming. A voice over the loudspeaker chanting Psalm 23. Gunfire. The bandstand again, in flames. Then nothing. Mark remembers nothing.

BORD90.BMF
A page border composed of black rhombuses, 12 each on the top and bottom, 15 each on the right and left. Every rhombus is bisected by a white X, turning it from a single black diamond into an elegant ornament comprised of four smaller black diamonds. Rose remembers her Comparative Religion professor sophomore year telling the class that certain Wiccans believed the rhombus to be imbued with mystical properties connected both to the poles and to celestial bodies. And, the professor monologued to the sleepy 8:30am class, the power of the rhombus is magnified fourfold should the rhombus be subdivided into smaller rhombuses. The professor suddenly clapped her hands, jolting the students wide awake. Woe to those, she said, who trivialize the rhombus. They toy with thaumaturgical forces they do not understand. Rose closes out BORD90, deciding it’s not the right page border for this project.

A cherry red Chevrolet Chevelle SS coupe. Famous for its Coke-bottle styling, the Chevelle SS was the iconic muscle-car of its era. Or so Yìchén gathers from his research. The special operative in the Eleventh Bureau is always on alert for codes and cryptograms hidden in plain sight on social media—it’s part of his job, after all—and in this clipart he detects a possible message. The license plate says 1970, while the filename says 71, which one would presume means 1971. Yet, Yìchén knows from digging around that the 1970 version of the Chevelle featured Chevy’s famous quad headlights, as seen here, while the 1971 version featured integrated, single-unit headlights. So how to explain the discrepancy? What does it mean? Is it a message hidden in the original 1990s clipart, or something added here by its American botmaker. Yìchén has the vast resources of the Ministry of State Security at his disposal, and he’s going to find out.

A paint brush, the kind used for home improvement jobs, not the kind used on a canvas for art. Still, the brush was all Rebecca Harkness could find in the garage when she awoke from a long nap with a powerful urge to make art. Rebecca scrambled around the house, looking for a suitable canvas. She settled on the ping-pong table in the basement, hoisted on its side, nine feet tall and five feet wide. Rebecca grabbed whatever cans of paint she could find. Agreeable Gray. Copen Blue. Pewter Tankard. She never paused to question what compelled her to paint. To do so would have triggered alarm bells she had no wish to sound. Rebecca Harkness painted as if in a trance, covering the ping-pong table with a gray base and slowly layering colors into a monstrous portrait. A figure in profile made of inanimate household objects rendered in paint—scissors, cutlery, candles, lamps, and more. Rebecca painted through the day, into the evening. A color portrait of a Michael Medved, chief film critic of the New York Post in the 1990s. Shown here with bushy black hair and a thick mustache and horn-rimmed glasses, Medved was known at the time for his conservative critiques of Hollywood films, which he saw as a corrupting force on American society. Medved went so far in 1995 as to argue for a “slasher tax”—an additional fee added to the ticket price of violent and sexually explicit movies. “If pop culture consumers went to the local multiplex and noted a price difference between ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Hoop Dreams,’” Medved wrote in the LA Times on June 5, 1995, “a few might consider saving a few bucks and trying the less savage choice.” Father John doubts that movies—or comic books or video games or anything else humans make—do much to move the need on human brutality.
