Sometimes you just need to draw gerbils
A page full of doodles of gerbils. Or one particular gerbil. I draw gerbils correctly; it's reality that gets them wrong.

i'm reading STAY ALIVE, ian buruma's book about life in berlin during WWII, and came across this bit about how the germans thought shakespeare worked best in german translation. is this where @nicholasmeyer.bsky.social got the "in the original klingon" bit in THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY from
"Shakespeare, too, found favor with the Nazis, as a Nordic bard whose true spirit was most evident in German translation (an idea already around in the eighteenth century). A critic in Der Stürmer, the most crassly antisemitic journal in Nazi Germany, compared Hamlet's fate of being robbed of his inheritance to Germany's humiliation in 1918 by the Allies at Versailles."

A squiggly line drawing by James Thurber of something that might be a rabbit looking back over its shoulder or a bird looking forward and upwards, depending on how you interpret it. Text underneath, from his book A Thurber Carnival, says:

Q. Our gull cannot get his head down any farther than this, and bumps into things.
H. L. F.

A. You have no ordinary gull to begin with. He looks to me a great deal like a rabbit backing up. If he *is* a gull, it is impossible to keep him in the house. Naturally he will bump into things. Give him his freedom.

Found a joke just for me: in the episode of Futurama where they go to a realm of pure numbers, Dr. Farnsworth calls it a "realm of beauty bare," a hilarious reference to the Edna St. Vincent Millay line "Euclid alone has looked on beauty bare." The fewer people get a joke, the funnier it is

It really was deeply unfortunate that the October 7 attack went down long after Musk assumed control. Far from its most ghastly consequence, but a really awful coincidence all the same

My take re: McGurk is that even if you take him at relatively his word re: Biden et al privately attempting to restrain Israel (which is to an extent likely true) the obvious takeaway is that it did not work and whatever future admin is in place will need to much more seriously take public measures.

A freeing kind of view here is that I don’t particularly feel the need to engage in a kind of backwards looking defense of Biden or whatever.

Additionally, I feel like people's intuition for probability in games is more of a card deck than a die. I. e an outcome with a 5% chance will happen eventually you keep drawing enough, comprising as it does 5% of all cards. Of course, it almost always works like a die

had to google this one up so his company's name is not a LOTR reference, it is a Russian bootleg novel reference where Sauron is the good guy web-wp.archive.org/web/20150910...
Thiel's reputation for contrarianism is well founded. Forever the chess player, he revels in trying to outthink the competition, in devising the unexpected move—the seemingly absurd but devastating maneuver that no one sees coming. "Most people think that if something's written, if it's shared by the majority of people, then you'll look like a black sheep for challenging it," says his friend Gary Kasparov, the Russian chess grandmaster. "Peter doesn't have any problem with that." A devoted J.R.R. Tolkien fan from an early age, Thiel is equally enamored with Kirill Eskov's The Last Ringbearer, a retelling of The Lord of the Rings in which Sauron is a beleaguered victim and the elves are bellicosely bent on world domination. "Gandalf's the crazy person who wants to start a war," Thiel explains, "and Mordor is this technological civilization based on reason and science. Outside of Mordor, it's all sort of mystical and environmental and nothing works. Anyway, it's really clever." He's
