Pro cyclist here who grew up in abject poverty as an only child. When I started cycling seriously in my teens I needed extra calories mom couldn't afford. I used to go to the local food bank and pretend I had three siblings. They knew and never said a word. They were true saints.

Comedian / actor / Pepper Pig's Mum voice actor Morwenna Banks; long blonde hair, red dress, pink tights, sat with head in hands and just looking really quite beautiful Morwenna Banks in Vic & Bob's legendary bad dream / sketch parody of Masterchef. Her body is padded oddly, her head is lowered but her red-rimmed eyes look forward, long-ish black hair that looks wet and freezing cold. She is terrifying.

TIL that it's 70 years since the first commercial hard drive shipped. It stored 3.75 Mb of data, and was two metres high. 70 years! Today there's > 200 zetabytes of stored data, nearly a billion billion times more. Has anyone found the Marie Kondo of data? www.computerhistory.org/storageengin...
Picture of a stack of 50 black disks and the equipment to read the data around it. Also this text: "In 1954 Reynold Johnson assembled a team at the IBM R&D Laboratory at 99 Notre Dame Ave., San Jose, California charged with developing fast mass storage systems to replace punched cards and magnetic tape in accounting and inventory control applications. Informed by Jacob Rabinow’s ideas at NBS, IBM developed and shipped the first commercial Hard Disk Drive (HDD), the Model 350 disk storage unit, to Zellerbach Paper, San Francisco in June 1956 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) system. No, the 2026 drought isn't over yet! Historically low flow in the river Rhine, where it enters the Netherlands: 640 m³/s now, and expected to drop below 600 by the weekend. The lowest ever measured this time of the year was 750 m³/s. Unprecedented, again. waterberichtgeving.rws.nl/owb/watervei...

The radio call to the Solomon Browne unanswered. The seconds of static that seem to drag on into minutes, hours, days. The repeat call, out into radio silence. Anyone attacking the RNLI is no mariner, has no concept of the power of the sea and should sit down and shut the fuck up.

Friday night challenge - can we identify all these? If we number the left column as 1-5 from top to bottom and the right 6-10 I'll give you 6 as a Queen Elizabeth class post-30s refit (Barham? Malaya?) and 7 as HMS Porpoise - unless anybody has better ideas?
A box of Scale Models of ten Famous Fighting Ships of the British Navy, from Tremo Models. Ten miniature lead vessels sit inside the green box.Close up of the left hand side. They're pretty detailed for lead models, and apparently the turrets can be rotated. Some of them look quite droopy mind...And the right-hand side.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a guy is being interviewed in an office. The interviewer, pointing to his computer display, asks, “can you explain this gap in your resume?” The interviewee replies, “uh…” Panel 2: out of thin air a portal emerges between the two men. Rocketing out of the portal is a time traveling dodo bird wearing futuristic gear. The dodo exclaims, “I’m back! I saved us from extinction!” A coffee cup is knocked over. Panel 3: at the edge of the desk, the dodo takes a knee, staring futilely out the window to a metropolitan city. It says, “No… NO!!” The two men observe, nonplussed.
