Ever since I first saw it, this scene has epitomised Amerlcan elegance for me. I wrote a short story about it for Radio 4 (never broadcast) and it's why I drink Gibsons even though nobody who works in a bar these days knows what they are. A perfect scene - RIP Eva Marie Saint.

the book is astoundingly good, @beetlemoses.bsky.social !!! Out of nearly 200 pages, this one got me the best.
[Two yellow fish are speaking to each other near the surface of the water.]

"Bro I told you, it's him."

                               - "I don't know. . ."

Arup Christmas Party 1966. What a night! Probably would have been in the Palace Suite with The Boston Crabs (Alley-oop!) and the Huddster. Coaches at 2.30am! Where have we gone wrong :(

This Oxford Uni building used to be the High School for Boys. Couple of famous old boys include Ronnie Barker, so Spoons, naturally, named the pub next door “The Four Candles.”
Two cyclists ride past old building on wet road. Blue and cloudy sky. Red brick building with close-up of The Four Candles pub sign.

A blue-green octopus with mantle fins and purple web patterns tracing along its body hovers suspended in the open ocean. Its arms are extended and gripping four lines of rope, held in perfect tension by the competing pressure of floating kelp bladders above and the gravity of net weights below. The octopus's two front arms grip a pair of shells, one pointed and one a fan shape, entwined below its body. Text reads 'Justice'. Digital art by SS Julian

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

Pro cyclist here who grew up in abject poverty as an only child. When I started cycling seriously in my teens I needed extra calories mom couldn't afford. I used to go to the local food bank and pretend I had three siblings. They knew and never said a word. They were true saints.

Comedian / actor / Pepper Pig's Mum voice actor Morwenna Banks; long blonde hair, red dress, pink tights, sat with head in hands and just looking really quite beautiful Morwenna Banks in Vic & Bob's legendary bad dream / sketch parody of Masterchef. Her body is padded oddly, her head is lowered but her red-rimmed eyes look forward, long-ish black hair that looks wet and freezing cold. She is terrifying.

TIL that it's 70 years since the first commercial hard drive shipped. It stored 3.75 Mb of data, and was two metres high. 70 years! Today there's > 200 zetabytes of stored data, nearly a billion billion times more. Has anyone found the Marie Kondo of data? www.computerhistory.org/storageengin...
Picture of a stack of 50 black disks and the equipment to read the data around it. Also this text: "In 1954 Reynold Johnson assembled a team at the IBM R&D Laboratory at 99 Notre Dame Ave., San Jose, California charged with developing fast mass storage systems to replace punched cards and magnetic tape in accounting and inventory control applications. Informed by Jacob Rabinow’s ideas at NBS, IBM developed and shipped the first commercial Hard Disk Drive (HDD), the Model 350 disk storage unit, to Zellerbach Paper, San Francisco in June 1956 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) system.
